Kojima has "other ideas for Metal Gear" ... Also regrets MGS4's cutscenes

Gothic Girl | August 25, 2008 | Interview | Playstation 3
In a recent interview with Kikizo, much-loved Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima discussed life after Metal Gear Solid, revealing his future plans in the gaming industry, his ideas for further MG games (one of the many hints that he'll continue the series), and the slight regret he felt in adding all of Metal Gear Solid 4's plot into the long cutscenes rather than doing it some other way.

Discuss in the Metal Gear Solid 4 forum
Kojima:

"I say frankly, on a private level, that I always intend to stay true to these statements; I do always say what I actually feel at that time, after each Metal Gear, when I say I am going to move on to the next project. But it's like when Hayao Miyazaki says he is not going to do more, and then always ends up doing it. I think I am kind of in a similar situation; I have ideas other than Metal Gear, and I want to go on to make other new games, but for political, business or technology reasons, there is always a time when I have to return. But I have to say, my feeling hasn't changed; I would like to pass on the Metal Gear series to younger staff members, and then go on to produce the title, and not be so attached to it.

I always want to be in a creative position, where I can concentrate and grow as a creator. I feel if I don't do that, I might as well not be in the industry. But on the other hand, I am looking after and responsible for the business side of Konami as a whole, as well as for Kojima Productions, and it would be ridiculous for me on the business side to say I will just bring out a game every four years. Therefore, I would like to keep doing what I do, but at the same time, pass my own ideas to the staff who can take over and produce. That's what I have been doing, and I would like to keep doing it this way. And in my spare time I want to establish a new game, which I have been wanting to do for a long time. I do have strong urges to create a new title other than the Metal Gear series. As a businessperson, I might worry whether it will sell more than the Metal Gear series, but that's another issue!

But when I said it's a difficult question to answer, I mean that when we look ten years into the future, maybe yes, I may well end up spending more time on the Metal Gear series!

Gameplay is always fundamental. Halo, BioShock — I see their approach and I think they are brilliant in some ways, but I still feel they still lack a kind of a deeper storyline or the expression of the feelings of the characters. I do have plans of how I should approach this and get around it. In MGS4, yes, I put everything in the cut sequences, which I kind of regret to some extent, because maybe there is a new approach which I should think about. I'm always thinking about it - making it interactive but at the same time telling the story part and the drama even more emotionally. I would like to take that approach, which I am still working on.
...Storytelling is very difficult. But adding the flavor helps to relay the storytelling, meaning in a cutscene, with a set camera and effects, you can make the users feel sorrow, or make them happy or laugh — this is an easy approach, which we have been doing. That is one point, the second point is that if I make multiple storylines and allow the users to select which story, this might really sacrifice the deep emotion the user might feel; when there's a concrete storyline, and you kind of go along that rail, you feel the destiny of the story, which at the end, makes you feel more moved. But when you make it interactive — if you want multiple stories where you go one way or another — will that make the player more moved when he or she finishes the game? These two points are really the key which I am thinking about, and if this works, I think I could probably introduce a more interactive storytelling method."

I can't wait to see what this new idea for a game is about, and I can see where he's coming from with the cutscenes. Lots of games these days are trying to do it differently and he probably feels similar. Still MGS4 wouldn't have worked any other way in my opinion.

He's always changing his mind, trying to better everything he does.

That's why his games are so good

I agree, they were awesome. Most were pretty engaging, and not a drag. MGS2 President scene anyone? I always thought the "nightmare" in MGS3 was supposed to be a trailer for a new game? I wouldn't mind ZOE3 then another MG, if there has to be another.

He's talking about the possibility of interactive storyline telling. I'd say he should *bleep*ing go for it. If Mass Effect isn't example enough, plus with a creative mind such as his...

Kojima really is brilliant when it comes to creativity and ingunuity. He was the first one to come out with a game that involved stealth when all other games were copy offs of the same rambo/destroy everything knock off game.

I love Metal gear games and would welcome another, but I dont know how I'll feel when the hero isnt snake.

I think I would welcome a different game from kojima. I think he could possibly have some Idea in him greater then MG.

He has worked on other games. Zone of Enders for example. They just usually aren't as well received. ZOE was primarily purchased for the MGS2 demo.

It is as he said from a business stand point he almost has to continue the MG series. Because it sells and the company is gareenteed profit.

He's Kojima. That in itself guarantees PS3 exclusivity.

MGS4 CGs do bother, the game is not a game, and is not a movie, you cannot sit back and relax like a movie, because sometimes you play, and you cannot play it because is sometimes that you play (WTF?) and plus no real difficulty on the game, no real replay value, and a piece of crap multi-player that did not work on MGS3 and MGS portable ops, and for sure it will not work on MGS4, please this game is over rated (like HALO 3), out of all the crap kojima talk, and 50 GBs you get a "game" that half of it is CGs that last up to 45 minutes, this is OK the first time, but no one will play this game again, is linear, is 10 hours long and no real challenge to it, the graphs are over the top, beautiful game, I rated 8.5 overall

One thing is to express your opinion, but you might just be one of the most ignorant people in the video game world or close.

Where to start? Oh yeah! Cutscenes = fan pleasers, not perfect but then again people love to exaggerate.

No difficulty...I take it you already mastered Big Boss Extreme with the Big Boss Emblem blindfolded or something?

And just because you get your ass handed to you Online doesn't make it shit. Besides the hundreds still playing MPO+ AND MGO, what exactly makes you think that the multiplayer doesn't work? It's like looking at a successful amusement park and calling it a failure.

No replay value? This must be your first MGS? Last time I checked, MGS/2/3 used the SAME EXACT FORMULA for rewards and Rankings and apparently it has worked, shocking I know.

Quite honestly I wouldn't have said much about your opinion, but when you fail to mention details so you can justify beating your chest on a mindless rant, someone has to tell you how full of shit you are.

Usually I would support the "it's his opinion" argument, but in this case I agree; MGS4, and MGS in general, is like the best game [series] ever created. I can't imagine anyone NOT liking it.

Would it really kill people to tell shit like it really is without trying to come off like some Lewis Black wannabe?

"I think cutscenes are a bit too long for their own good, not too bad for fans though but not too good for others."

          Instead we get...

"OMFG, CUTSCENES ARE SO *bleep*ING LONG, U SPEND MORE TIME WATCHING THAN PLAYING."

This is when you know someone's just trying to be pathetically funny.
