Capcom believe PS3 finally taking off thanks to MGS4

Krunal | September 02, 2008 | Interview | Playstation 3 Company
Capcom shocked many when they announced that Devil May Cry 4 would be going multiplatform, and the clear reason behind it was money. The Playstation 3 at that point simply hadn't sold enough for them to make much money, and releasing it on the XBOX360 allowed them to reach a wider range of audience. However it seems they're finally seeing the Playstation 3 as 'having reached full swing' and that too, thanks to MGS4.
Q. Do you feel that PlayStation 3 (PS3) has expanded sufficiently for the release of large-scale titles such as "Resident Evil 5"?

A. We believe that PS3 has finally reached full swing after looking at the success of "Metal Gear Solid 4," as well as future large-scale title lineups. In addition, some reduction in the PS3's price was announced at the 2008 E3, and we can expect its spread to increase by next March when our "Resident Evil 5" for PS3 will be released. Moreover, as we are not only focusing on PS3, we would also like to spread our supply of software evenly between Wii and Xbox 360 while their markets in the world increase in a similar manner to PS3."

Here's a clue, Capcom. If more devs kept their PS2 exclusives on PS3, the numbers would be different. Not like I care. DMC4 was a huge waste of my time, and it looks like RE5 will be too. I just think it's funny hearing developer after developer praising PS3 now. Even Valve is looking into it.

Valve never looks into PS3 development. Where'd you hear that? If it's true, then it's news to me.

The thing is here, as you said, if most devs kept PS2 exclusives to PS3, the PS3 sales would have just gone up exponentially. The thing is, developers have to take that initial risk on the console: if their exclusive game sells well, it's more sales for the console, meaning bigger profit for exclusive games. If the game fails, or doesn't reach many sales despite its quality, they'll either multiplatform or go exclusively to the other console(s). DMC4 came out early in the PS3's life, and they weren't planning on risking it.

Then how would you explain FFXIII jumping ship? They announced that after the success of MGS4, and well after the PS3 was in full swing.

Its all about money now. Has nothing to do about risk. They're all just too damn greedy. But aren't we all?

A big fat check with Microsoft's name on it.

Frankly I don't care what Capcom think. All their games are going down hill in my opinion.

You think so? No, Square Enix has made it pretty clear that they weren't gonna risk developing games exclusively for the PS3 (with the exception of Versus XIII, which is only because Nomura is heading that one), especially with their shaky budget.

At least until PS3 becomes profitable. Opinions will change.

They don't seem to have a problem developing exclusively for 360, so one PS3 exclusive shouldn't have hurt them that much.

Then why did Square Enix not announce it until now? The PS3 was looking a hell of a lot shakier a year back. No something changed for them, and that makes me think of a substantial amount of cash changed hands.

Regardless of what some might think about the quality of Capcom's games, they're still rolling in dough and as a big-name developer/publisher, their opinion can carry quite a bit of influence.

That being said, it's cute that people still bent out of shape over Square-Enix's alleged betrayal haven't realized yet that Final Fantasy has never been exclusive to any ONE console, meaning they'll go to anyone who can help turn a profit... like just about every company that wants to stay wealthy. They went to the 360 because it's there.

Well, that's all fine and dandy if they told us they were going to do that from the beginning. Which they didn't. Not only is the game mutliplatforming, but we also have to wait for the 360 version to be completed before PS3 owners get ours. That's where a lot of the bellyaching is coming from.

I'm just glad they stayed true to keeping the PS3 version 100% optimised for PS3. Though I would not be at ALL surprised if the 360 version came out looking better.

I don't know about Capcom swinging their opinion around and influencing things. I mean, I would understand if it was BioWare, BethSoft, Valve, Konami, etc.

We're talking about Capcom, these are the guys that say "Sorry, but we can't port a good 2006 game, we're too busy making shit ports for the Wii/PS3".

RCG thats not why most people are complaining, its cause both SE and Sony has advertised on many videos saying FF13 was only "POSSIBLE" on the PS3 system. Thats the point, and the fact they kept it going for 2 years now.

I have to agree with Silver Mirror that MS might have had a hand in paying some hard amount of cash for it to go multiplatform.

Also IIRC MGS4 didn't do anything for sales with the PS3, didn't the sales slowed down before July and afterwards even in Japan? Sorry I fail to see how MGS4 did any exponential increase for the PS3. I mean MGS4 in the bargin bins...seriously.

And this is rich coming from capcom.

A lot of people bought the MGS4 PS3 bundle, and sales didn't go up because of MGS4 because, really, they were going up to start with.

So what if MGS4 is in the bargain bin? I hope to dear God you're not implying the game isn't worth it.

Lastly, FFXIII is only possible on PS3-the PS3 version, anyway. The 360 version will be, well, not as optimised. Simple. They weren't lying, they were just telling it like it was.

Where in my post did I suggest MGS4 isn't worth it? If I'd thought that I wouldn't have the game.

I was just making the point that in some areas it didn't do nearly as much of an increase to help the PS3 gain ground and Capcom now saying "Capcom believe PS3 finally taking off thanks to MGS4" When before MGS4, the PS3 was actually doing quite well, in fact it outsold the 360 and sometimes Wii in the months. In June however it didn't outsell anything. Im just saying, MGS4 didn't really make it a huge different then what Capcom is making it out to be.

Also FF13 is going to be the same at the end of the day PS3 or 360. I was just saying what they were throwing out giving false hope and advertisements to the fans.
