Ryan Payton: "The Japanese public isn't interested in Next-Gen Gaming"

Gothic Girl | September 03, 2008 | Interview | Playstation 3 Wii
In a recent interview with Kotaku, ex-assistant producer of Metal Gear Solid 4, Ryan Payton, revealed that Japan no longer seems to be the center of game development, as many Japanese developers are starting to feel the pressure to appeal to a wider audience outside of Japan and focus more on technology and the Western audience.
Payton feels as though the "Japanese public seems to be disinterested in next-gen and high definition gaming" as a result, and just want to play games that are fun and able to bring nostalgia.
Payton's move back from Japan to the U.S. couldn't come at a better time for a game developer, as the focus on game development seems to be shifting from former dev powerhouse Japan to the U.S. Japan may still be the center of the gaming universe when it comes to cold hard cash, but when it comes to development it no longer seems to be, Payton said.

"The Japanese public seems to be disinterested in next-gen and high definition gaming," he said, pointing to the 360 and its apparent uphill battle in Japan as proof of that. "There is a stigma still attached to western technology there."

"It's not about the tech in Japan, it's about the games, it's about nostalgia."

"While Japanese gamers still seem interested in the sorts of games coming out of Japan, the same isn't as true for the rest of the world's gamers", Payton said.

"It's apparent, everyone knows it in Japan," he said. "The developers here feel the pressure. They're starting to develop more with the West in mind and the tech is in the west now. I'm surprised at how many titles have been produced on the Unreal 3 Engine."

"Team Ninja was one of the few development teams in Japan who seemed to get that", Payton said, "so it's ironic that they disbanded after their latest Ninja Gaiden". He sees Square-Enix's move to snatch up Tecmo and its assets as heartening, perhaps a sign that Square-Enix is hoping to return to their golden age.

japanese gamers are very fussy when it come to games.. any game thats not japanese made they wont touch which is sad because most JRPG are on the 360 and are getting average reviews.

How come GTA sold loads down there? They do buy games which arent Japanese. And JRPGS on the 360 get good reviews.

      Famitsu rated lost odyssey 36/40.
      Blue dragon got 9/10.

You realize that professional reviews have nothing to do with the general opinion of the public, right?

Ryan Payton needs reminding how well MGS4 did in Japan.

He did help make the game and all...

I believe it did good, but nothing out of the ordinary in Japan. Especially compared to how it did in the U.S.

I was under the impression that it did really well, considering the amount of PS3's in Japan.

        Ooh well...

MGS4 is one game and it didn't do as well in Japan as it did in the West.

    Did I hear Jack Thompson?

I also heard the Japanese aren't really interested in overseas games either, I don't get it myself I enjoy Japanese games.

I could care less about Japanese preferences in games and what not. If they don't like American games or whatever, that's fine. It's not like Japanese gamers make up a large portion of gamers everywhere, so it's no big loss.

Maybe it would do better if Sony stops releasing games for their PS2.

Sony's not the ones creating the games, you know.

Even if the PS2 goes out of commission if Sony decides to commit that kind of economic suicide...there's still the Portable systems in which Japan seems to give a shitload of attention to.

They're either that easily amused or they just can't live without their simple Japanese exclusive games.

What they're supposed to stop companies from releasing games for their consoles? Don't be ridiculous.

The Japanese gaming community is starting to look really stuck up to me. They refuse to buy American products and apparently hate current gen consoles. I mean what is up with that?

Jeez, way for some commentors to miss the point of the article. Japanese gamers aren't hating on next-gen consoles just for the sake of hating. Payton was pointing out that Japanese gamers don't care about graphics and just want a fun gaming experience, though unfortunately many next-gen games only focus on said graphics while gameplay and plot takes a backseat. That is what Payton was saying. (at least I hope that's what he is saying, because I tend to agree on that point).

TBH, I never read it like that. Im pretty much thought the same as everyone else. However with that said, Supernouva makes a brilliant point.

Didn't the Japanese invent next-gen gaming?
