High Voltage's Matt Corso on Wii Development and The Conduit

Akira_EX | September 09, 2008 | Interview | Wii
High Voltage Software's The Conduit is one of the hotly-anticipated games for the Wii, graphically pushing Nintendo's console in hopes of bringing a new top-tier game to the system. Gamasutra's Chris Remo had the chance to sit down with creative director Matt Corso and talk about the game and its development.

Development on The Conduit began in October of last year, and now the game is content complete, going through the various bugfixes and testing necessary to bring a fluid game experience. Corso notes the Wii as a strong system, with a lot of staying power in the industry. With The Conduit, High Voltage is looking to demolish the bar set by previous games in terms of look, feel, and quality. They expect that the game will continually evolve right up until release.

The Conduit will release in the first quarter of 2009. There is no publisher announced for the game as of right now.
Independent studio High Voltage Software is taking a bet on the Wii with its upcoming game The Conduit. Two bets, actually -- that the system's hardware is capable of significantly more than most developers have done with it, and that its broad audience contains a market for a hardcore-slanted first-person shooter.

The Conduit seems to be progressing well on the first front, based on gameplay demos and videos released by High Voltage, but the team will have to wait until the game's planned early 2009 release to see if it succeeds on the second.

Gamasutra sat down with creative director Matt Corso to chat about The Conduit. Expanding on a previous Gamasutra interview excerpt, Corso discussed the impetus that led to High Voltage choosing this route, some of the ways the team has had to treat the Wii hardware to get the results it needs, the company's relationship with Nintendo and its talks with publishers, and design considerations made with respect to the FPS genre.
