Princess Debut Interview with Natsume USA, and How They Got Cave to Do It

Akira_EX | September 18, 2008 | Interview | DS
Siliconera's Spencer Yip was able to sit down with Yasuhiro Maekawa, the President and CEO of the US arm of video game publisher Natsume, and talked about the company's upcoming DS title, Princess Debut, which is set to hit in the US on September 30th.

The oddity of Princess Debut is that it is developed by Cave, who is much more well-known for it's bullet hell shoot-em-ups such as DoDonPachi, Ketsui and Mushihime-sama. The interview talks about how the game came to be, and how Natsume was able to get Cave to make the game (Natsume approached Cave). The effort that went into the game is also expanded on, using the motion capture of professional dancers for the dances in the game. There will be no differences between the Japanese and English versions.

At the end of the interview, Spencer asks if Natsume has considered localizing Cave's shoot-em-ups to America, to which Maekawa responded: "We are always open to new content."
Natsume USA doesn’t have a room full of programmers ready to code game, but this hasn’t stopped Yasuhiro Maekawa, the CEO of Natsume from designing them. Mr. Maekawa planted the seed for Puzzle de Harvest Moon and handed development over to Platinum Egg. Princess Debut went through a similar unorthodox developmental path. Instead of teaming up with Platinum Egg again Cave was chosen to code the project, the same Cave known for Deathsmiles and Muchi Muchi Pork. Princess Debut is very different from what Cave usually does.

I spoke with Mr. Maekawa about his relationship with Cave, why he chose them as the developer, and his thoughts on developing games for girls.
