So we know that Lionhead Studios' Peter Molyneux doesn't think the PS3 will hit the big time until it has a game to back it up, but this new statement from Molyneux is bound to divide gamers.

Is Final Fantasy VII the game that defined the RPG genre, or isn't it ?

Discuss in the Final Fantasy VII forum

Speaking to VideoGamer.com earlier this week, Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux has revealed that he considers Square's Final Fantasy VII to be the game that defined the RPG genre.

"I always remember back to Final Fantasy VII, when I first played FFVII, that to me defined the genre," he said when talking about the PS3 and if it has had any defining titles. "Those were the 'oh my god' moments, I don't believe they exist. I haven't seen many of those on the PS3."

Before angry PS3 gamers send Mr Molyneux angry emails it's worth bearing in mind that, despite his company being owned by Microsoft, he owns all the major consoles.

"This is very much me as a gamer talking, not as an industry spokesman," he told us. "I've got a PS3, a Wii and a 360, I've got just about everything."

Look out for more from Peter Molyneux over the coming days.

At least he doesn't say the PS3 is complete trash like 360 fanboys do.

And the 360 fanboys saying that means something? PS3 fans talk the same trash.

Yeah, it's almost as if he's got a big game coming out soon.

Well its their opinion tbh. Whether or not I agree doesn't matter.

Tenken, you mean fanboys? Cause fans don't talk trash about a system.

      Yes they can.

Finding a fault with a Sony console does not make you a MS fanboy. Same applies the other way round.

Not always, fans or most of them do not talk trash. Sure they may not like the other system whether for taste or use of the system, they usually don't make stupid statements about it. Im a fan of the PS3 or Sony systems since PS1 was released. Sure I acted like a twat back in the day but I got carried away with the PS3 and all my researching and the like; which make have given off a fanboy atmosphere with it. Now im back to common sense and just a fan again.

I have to agree with Molyneux here.

I like how he is not hugging the game calling it the best Final Fantasy, but is identifying that it was this game which did indeed define the genre.

Not my personal favourite Final Fantasy but I can totally understand people who say its their favourite. That feeling you got was amazing. Outstanding package that game was.

Most people figured this out about ten years ago. Back when FFVII was, oh I dunno, defining the genre. (well... in the West, anyways).

Personally, I prefer FFX to FFVII--story, characters, everything about it. In any case, there's still FFXIII and Versus XIII coming (though FFXIII is multiplat).

Yeh Im with you on FFX > FFVII. It was fantastic and linear, yet still containing a lot of extra content for the committed. FFXIII Versus ftw <3
