God of War 3 makes Bethesda feel faint

chautemoc | January 06, 2009 | Interview | PC Playstation 3
The official PlayStation site has a feature up with thoughts from various developers in the industry on what they're most excited about this year. Cool read -- of special note is Fallout 3's Lead Producer Gavin Carter and his comment about God of War 3...
"I’m most looking forward to the coming instalments of PlayStation series that haven’t seen a true next generation debut – namely God of War and Final Fantasy. Everything I’ve seen on the new Final Fantasy games has looked fantastic, and I feel faint when I think of the potential of a PS3 God of War game."
Gavin Carter, Lead Producer, Fallout 3, Bethesda Game Studios

It should make every self-respecting gamer feel that way. God Of War III will be up there as one of the best games of this generation. I have absolutely no issues with saying that now, despite the lack of footage and info available, as the previous two were just so ridiculously good.

Bethesda showing some love for the Playstation? I've never heard of such a thing!

I'll sound like SJ, but whatever.

Bethesda don't hate the PS. It's about business, MS shove the money under their noses they'll be only too happy to give exclusive dlc. Think about it, they've been creating games for PC, Xbox longer than they have for PS3, so in some respect their relationship with MS would be better. I'm sure if Sony shoved more money under Bethesda's nose, they'd be only too happy to produce exclusive dlc for the PS.

Just a typo, you said "PC" when you meant "PS3" XD

Yeah, Sony doesn't pay extra, like MS does, for exclusive content. It's the same as it was for GTA IV....

I've never played a God of War game. I see the abbreviation GoW and think Gears of War. I'll probably try out God of War III though.

Don't, you won't understand anything. You have to play parts 1 and 2 in order to get the most out of the plot in part 3.

Its what I do for most games.

Lol I guess you're right. I played MGS4 without playing any of the others, I enjoyed the story but I wish I had some background stuff filled out, I should take into consideration with this game as well. I'll probably just pull out my PS2 (as I'm stuck with no backwards compatibility) and will just rent the first two games, so I can see what I have missed out on.

I'm in the same boat as you, poo0BKp. MGS4 was my first MGS and while I do know some of the lore from the previous games just from what I've read here and there I felt that I was missing out on quite a bit of the story. I still loved every bit of MGS4 but there was just that nagging feeling all the time of having missed out on something.

tekmosis, I suggest buying the Metal Gear Anniversary collection. It comes with Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3. The Metal Gear Solid 3 disc I believe also comes with Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for the MSX.

The older games are harder to get into, and Metal Gear Solid hasn't aged all that well, but all of them are still great games.

tekmosis, we can have a week long MGS marathon, that way we both understand what has happened in the entire series.

Also, to pooOBKp, I reccomend just renting God of War 1 and 2, because both games are relatively short. I mean unless you really want to buy them, they're both pretty cheap these days.

why do people think Beth Soft hate the PS3?

Yeah sure PS3 didn't get DLC for Oblivion...Sony's fault not Beth Soft's. Sony and Beth Soft were arguing about DLC way before PS3 was even released...Sony turned it all away and Beth Soft decided it wasn't worth the hassle to chase them.

Anyway, I have GoW 1 and 2 on the shelf waiting to be played right now...from the hour I played already of GoW 1, I am liking it...so with that and a recommendation from my favourite developers...GoW 3 means business and hopefully will be sony's and PS3's saviour

Because god knows Sony and the PS3 need to be 'saved'...is no one remotely optimistic regarding the PS3? It's like the better it gets, the more people doubt it...

I have God of War and God of War II for the PS2 and I've never even played them. Kinda never got around to it like many of my games. Suppose I should give them a go before the GoW3 release.

Last I checked, the PS3 was doing just fine without a "saviour", with arguably the best 2008 lineup and fantastic sales compared to the Xbox360. But ok...

Considering if you are a total FPS nutjob...yes tremendous lineup they have there

Don't get me wrong...some spanking games but there is a different air and feel to the PS3 unlike there was with the PSX and PS2. What I mean by that is the fact that PS2 no matter what they were up against, always had the backing of Sony 200%. The PS2 is pretty much undoubtedly the most successful console made, the titles upon it range across all genres tenfold.

The PS3 however feels like the lazy assed half-brother sponging off the more successful brother's fame and fortune, it has graphics, it has power but not a "whole lot processing in the head" if you catch my drift. In fact it is more orientated towards the FPS/Action & Adventure types, what with Unchartered, Haze, Time Shift, CoD4 & 5, Stranglehold, Unreal Tournament III, Rainbow Six: Las Vegas 1 & 2 and whatever else you crazy kids play these days.

What does RPG genre have? Bethesda Softworks more or less, which Sony pushes away idiotically and towards their rivals. So you have Fallout 3 and Oblivion....then you have Untold Legends, which I do play once in a blue moon but 60% of the PS3 population dislike it or never played it. Then you have Enchanted Arms which is in the same situation as Untold Legends.

My point? Although GoW isn't a RPG, it is still set firmly within the "fantasy" section that I prefer to dwell in. It is a refresher from all the gun wielding FPS and Action Adventures, ok it switches guns with swords but throwing a mixture about wouldn't hurt Sony one bit

I doubt you will ever see another "PS2" console ever again. The cost to make a PS2 game back then was, after a couple years after release, undoubtedly easy. Making big-name games cost developers a LOT less, so people weren't so reluctant to really put the effort in. Granted, the PS2 got its own share of shovelware, but the fact that it was so easy to develop for meant that great games came out a lot more often, and devs didn't almost go bankrupt over making them.

It's a new age. Everything's more powerful, but conversely harder to develop for.

PS2 has been around almost 9 years. PS3 has been around just longer than 2 years. How is it sponging off it's little brother, when the exclusives that made it so popular are now multiplatform? How are you ignoring all the new IPs on PS3, with a truck load of exclusives coming this year alone?

Now I know it's not, but with all the hype around God of War III and all the praise it's been getting without even a release date it sight, it would really suck if the game came out to be 2 steps back from the first game and actually sucked.

    *knocks on wood*

I pray that doesn't happen though.

Can't see it, to be honest.

Gameplay is already perfect, so doesn't need any changes. All they have to do is bulk up the graphics, flesh out the storyline, and add a few other bits and pieces here and there. Just give the already perfect series a next-gen makeover, basically.

The GoW series is one of my favorite franchises in the Sony library, aside from Final Fantasy. I'm very much looking forward to this, especially now that I finally upgraded from a tiny CRT to a larger HD LCD. Me and my roommate played through GoW/GoW2 and I can't wait to get my hands on the third installment of the series
