Despite her rather 'busty' appearance, ex-Creative Director of Crystal Dynamics, Eric Lindstrom believes that Lara Croft isn't aimed towards a male audience. In a recent blog post, Lindstrom admitted that the Tomb Raider series aren't gender-specific, and that they appeal to male and female gamers equally.
He might want to send that memo to Eidos ... They're currently looking into making Lara more "female friendly".

"I feel that even though Lara has attributes that appeal to males, the games doesn't pander to a male audience. Look at all the other games out there with female heroes, and look at their bustlines and what they are (barely) wearing. My Lead Designer Harley (a woman) agrees that Tomb Raider is not a gender specific game, and research shows that it appeals to female gamers very well.

I can see how it would make females feel empowered but I still think it's aimed more toward male gamers for obvious reasons.

/agree. Now FAITH from Mirrors Edge didn't seem like she was aimed at male gamers given that her body proportions are "respectful" and not taking the T&A route. Another great example to draw a comparison is Jade from Beyond Good and Evil - those were female character that empowered without having large assets.

This is an obvious lie to get feminists off their ass. God knows that Lara Croft was not made in order to claim a large female fanbase. Those big boobies are all for men... and possibly lesbians.

I can understand that some women would enjoy playing their own sex, but its obvious her original creation was very male orientated.

I consider myself a feminist but I've never had anything against her as a character, even with her assets. She's a tough girl with a respectable background, neither trashy nor unbelievably useless -- definitely not some J-RPG stereotype.

If she wants to look sexy while doing her thing, sure, whatever. Not like video game attire is ever practical. Her breasts aren't a sensible size either considering her work, but not everyone can be Faith Conners...

I remember reading something about her breasts originally being smaller but due to some fluke, they wound up looking larger than intended. It was a success with the design team and they ultimately kept it. Sure, her appearance is pretty male-oriented, but I can see where the guy is coming from. As a character, Croft is quite kick ass.

Lara Croft is not aimed at a male audience?

    Right, right...
You mean, just like how Telitubbies and Care Bears aren't aimed at little kids?

    C'mon, get real.
The first Tomb Raider came out when consol video games were just starting to get going.
And what's the best way to get sales?
    That's right.
Create a bad-ass sex-object that all the geeky computer nerds can jerk it to all night.

    Heh.
"Not aimed at a male audience" my ass...
