Capcom's 'head of character contents business', Toshihiro Tokumaru, recently speaking for a piece to be featured in Capcom's Investor Relations communication, has revealed the company licensing the movie rights to Resident Evil as they did was "unfortunate".

He implies they made a poor decision in passing over all rights with the deal, thereby losing all ability to use 'any finished product'. As such, "in the future, we'd like to create films where we retain the rights".

More interesting bits at the source, where Tokumaru talks more on films and their relationship with gaming.

I was fooled by the wording, I thought they were finally apologizing for the movies

It does make sense to be pissed they couldn't use the finished product in their own games or make a movie based game using clips from the flick or anything.

I was too! But there wasn't really another way to word it. In any case, if they did retain rights, maybe the movies wouldn't suck so much.

Am i one of the few people who even though a hardcore fan of the Resident Evil games actually ENJOYED the movies? I thought they were and still are some of the best game to movie spin offs yet.

I actually really like the first movie. The second one was meh, and the third was horrible. I think after the claustrophobic environment in the first one, it was a bad choice to move towards more open locations. It kind of ruined the atmosphere set by the first movie.

Hey, at least the movies aren't being done by Uwe Boll.

Well at least they admit it. The *bleep* they thought was gonna happen? In any case, Degeneration ftw.

      Degeneration ftw.
      Thums up for that sentence.

I enjoyed the Live action RE's but Degeneration was FAR better.

The first live action RE movie was good. 2nd and 3rd ones not so much. Degeneration was far better because it was made by capcom (or at least a guy that knows the story).
And as stated above at least they admit it.

exactly. RE 1 wasnt too bad, but 2 and 3 were awful. who the hell is Alice anyway and what does she have to do with RE? plus in 3 she starts getting Jedi powers and whatnot, like she creates a force field thing around her. total shit.
