Todd Howard spoke to MTV's Multiplayer blog in regards to three of the most talked about problems with the game. Normally if a developer talks to any press about their games at all, if it is negative, they usually try and spin the story into something else. I commend Todd for not avoiding any of the criticisms.

Criticism: #1: "Fallout 3" is just mediocre when judged as a first person shooter

Howard: Agreed.

***

Criticism #2: The ending isn't very satisfying and much shorter than other "Fallout" endings

Howard: Based on the feedback I've seen, most people are pissed off that it ends, not the 'ending' itself. Maybe that's one and the same, I don't know. That's another thing we're changing in DLC3 [downloadable content #3, "Broken Steel"]. We really underestimated how many people would want to keep playing, so that's probably the last time we'll do something like that.

***

Criticism #3: V.A.T.S. is boring once you're accurate enough to head shot everyone

Howard: Depends on what you find entertaining. I like to blow people's heads off, so, well, it never got old for me. I agree that the 'to hit chance' for head shots is probably too high.

They missed another criticism, the fact that the *bleep*ing PS3 version gets no DLC!

I think that is more of a criticism for Sony and their stance of "We don't buy exclusivity" (Jack Tretton quote).

If Microsoft is the one paying for the content to be made, it doesn't make sense for it to come out on other systems.

But it's not like Bethesda wouldn't make money by having DLC on the PS3. It's not like anyone is asking for FREE DLC. There's been 1mil+ sales on the PS3 and those users are chomping at the bit to drop cash on more of this game.

It's a cute tactic by Microsoft to keep doing exclusive content and give dev's a treat.......let's just hope they don't pay people off to start avoiding trophy support as well.

Thats not the point. Microsoft is paying for the development, it probably wouldnt be in the works in the first place otherwise. Go complain to Sony since to them, people giving them money isnt worth spending money for more games and game content content.

Are you certain MS is paying for the development of the DLC? Got a link to the source of this info?

Bethesda will not comment http://www.edge-online.com/news/bethesda-mum-fallout-3-dlc-exclusivity-deal (I do like how one commenter on that page placed blame on Sony's lack of memory in the PS3 as the reason why, which is completely possible, but not likely, as Bethesda would already know how to work around such an issue having already developed Oblivion and Fallout 3 on the PS3).

My reply to criticism #1: Why are judging Fallout 3 as a FPS? Fallout 3 switches between First Person and Third Person and ontop of that is actually a RPG no matter which way you look at it.

Yes when compared to actual FPS games, it is mediocre but that's because it isn't a traditional FPS, say like Halo for instance.

The rest Todd gives good answers too.

As to the PS3 DLC debate, Sony shot themselves in the foot with that one by a) saying they don't buy exlcusivity and b) being cowards and backing out of deals instead of putting money on the table like Microsoft has been doing.

Beth Soft are a company that have one thing in mind "making money" they will go to highest bidder and at the moment Microsoft are the only ones paying out

I really wouldn't classify fallout 3 as a RPG. It's more like a FPS with some RPG elements rather than the other way around.

Still wouldn't be a FPS I'm afraid...if the game didn't offer third person switching right off the bat then yes I would fully agree with you.

Bioshock is FPS with RPG elements yet it is still considered a Sci-Fi RPG or even referred to as RPG by most people.

Fallout 3 uses First Person and yes it has guns which yes would technically make it a FPS (First person shooter) but it's still foremost a RPG, in fact you could say it's a RPG with shooting elements

Which brings me to my next point, Fable II has guns, wouldn't that...in your logic be a FPS as well?

Its not guns that make fallout 3 a FPS, its the fact that I don't find it really to be a RPG at all.

The game just feels more like a FPS or a 3rd person shooter than a RPG to me.

I completely agree. It feels more like a FPS than an RPG to me as well, but the FPS elements are really weak compared to a good FPS, like Far Cry 2 or Crysis Warhead...

I don't know. I'm one of the few that didn't think the game was all that great at all. Definitely doesn't even come close to Fallout 1 + 2 as far as the RPG elements are concerned.

Fallout 3 is even more mediocre when judged as a dating sim. When judged as a shmup, it's probably the worst game ever made.

You guys do know that its actually possible to go through the entire game with firing a weapon only a handful of times, right? And anyway, a lot of guys play through the game using the 3rd person view exclusively, so try telling them its a FPS with RPG elements.

Really? I found the 3rd person view kinda shitty.....I don't like how the character moves.
