Think the Dead Rising Wii port looks woeful and disappointing? Capcom Product Marketing Manager Colin Ferris doesn't think so. In a recent interview with Gamedaily, Ferris explains why gamers shouldn't critisise the company's choice to port the title to the Nintendo Wii ...

Let's get this out of the way: Will DR:CTYD look as beautiful on the Wii as Dead Rising did on the Xbox 360? No. Will it have the same number of zombies on screen at the same time? No. Does that mean we should deny Wii gamers the joy that 360 owners had in surviving three days in a zombie-infested mall? The answer is, obviously, no.

Some claim that the only reason we brought Dead Rising to the Wii was to make money... You're right, we've been caught: We're guilty of being a business. In fact, as a gamer, you should want a brand that you love to be successful, because that increases the chance that we'll make more games. The games business is filled with titles that people love that simply did not make money: Viewtiful Joe. Okami. Zack and Wiki. Capcom as a company has decided to embrace a path that brings our entertainment to as many people as possible. This is why we are, for the most part, following a multi-platform strategy.

I'm sorry, but no amount of discussion will change the fact that the Wii Port is a total butcher on the original

Wow, Capcom can try and defend this game all they want, at the end of the day its just a big steaming pile of shit.

Seriously, what Wii owner would be excited about this game?

    A stupid one, thats who.

Oh? Is that so because you have obviously played the game yourself. You were sent a finished product of the video game by Capcom, since you're obviously a big fan of the guys, and you tested and finished the game, right? And once you've finished the game and obviously didn't like it, you now believe that any Wii owner who gets this game is stupid because your opinion is the only one out there and the only one that matters.

Holy *bleep* you'd make a good politician ;D

The thing that made Dead Rising good was the sheer number of zombies on the screen at any one point.

The Wii version simply doesn't have that.

I would rather say one that doesn't own a 360. But whatever.

We all know it is an inferior game. This Colin guy even admited it in the first paragraph. So the only people that are going to be interested are those that can't or don't get a 360 and still want the game. Everyone else will get a 360 and play the proper game.

Or a poor one. Remember the Wii was the cheapest console to begin with.

Why play a shitty port when theres a superior version? Seriously Capcom, nobody is going to buy it. If you had made a PS3 version with extra stuff, like you did with Lost Planet, than it wouldn't be a waste of cash.

You guys aren't think of people who own a Wii yet not a 360 or PS3. I pretty excited about Dead Rising coming to my console (as long as it's not rated MA). It will still be a great game, even if there's 20 less zombies on screen. Infact, for all we know, it could be better.

    quote
Completely rebuilt from the ground up, DR:CTYD was not designed for side-by-side graphics comparisons with the 360; it was designed to be a fun Wii game. With a brand-new engine created for the Wii, we've changed just about everything but the overall story. The save system, the weapons, the point of view and even the mission design have all been touched in order to make them ideal for the Wii audience. Fans of the original may like some of the changes and may not like some of the others, but we believe that we are creating a fun game for an entirely new audience made up of numerous Wii fans.

Maybe add another zero to that 20? It'll certainly be a lot closer to the amount of zombies lost.

Yeah, the whole point of Dead Rising was to show off what the 360 was capable of. Having hundreds (sometimes thousands?) of zombies on screen at one time is pretty amazing. And the many different ways of ploughing through them is what made the game unique.

Without the ridiculous amount of zombies, it's just another generic zombie shooter.

Fine, okay, live in your closed minded world if you make you feel more like a "hardcore gamer".

Like Colin Ferris is saying, the point of Dead Rising is not that you can have one thousand zombies on screen, the point of dead rising is that it's a fun game.

Of course he'd say that. He's the PR guy.

The point of Dead Rising Wii is that it's a fun zombie shooter because that's all Capcom can do with it. Make it into a zombie shooter and hope for the best.
The point of Dead Rising 360 is that's it's a unique and fun game because of the hundreds/thousands of zombies on screen. It was created to show gamers what the 360 was capable of. That was the point of the game.

Capcom could have made a completely new zombie game that plays to the Wii's strengths, but instead they made a heavily edited port of Dead Rising that does nothing but show Wii owners what their console isn't capable of.

Right, so if I take a shitfest like Shaq Fu, and sprinkle hundreds and thousands of enemies on screen, it becomes fun?
        • 2
          Hunskelper Feb 1, 09
That's exactly correct, except for the part where you said "Right, so if I take a shitfest like Shaq Fu, and sprinkle hundreds and thousands of enemies on screen, it becomes fun?".

Dead Rising on the 360 was a good game. Take out the zombie spamming and you get a mediocre one. It'd be like taking the sneaking out of Metal Gear Solid, or the ability to jump out of Mario.

          Zero and X Feb 2, 09
Shaq Fu was a one on one fighting game, terrible example.

Look Big A2, weather the game turns out to be good or not is not the point, its that its an inferior port no matter how you look at it. It could still be a "good" game but on a technical level its still going to be inferior to the original, not just in the graphics, but in the core aspect of what was the games main draw, the multiple enemies on screen. That was that games gimick, just like like Dante's gimick is the Devil Trigger, taking it out compromises the original game designs artistic intent.

One of the main fun things to do in Dead Rising for me was to take pictures, of loads of random crap and funny stuff, but hey look, you can't do that in the wii, why? caus its INFERIOR.

No matter what you say, or how you want to look at it, this port will SUCK compared to the original, Capcom just feels like you Wiibies are being left out of the loop and decided to throw a crappy port at you.

          Congrats!

I love how many people are putting down this game without ever having seen or played the final product. As someone said, there are those of us out there who only have a wii, and we're excited about the possibility of having a version of this game. Oh well, must be nice to be spoiled.

I'm willing to bet a lot of people with Wiis also have numerous accessories that get shoved down their throats...Those costs add up, you know.

For the record, I hardly see how getting a job, saving your money, and spending it wisely could ever be considered being "spoiled".

          RabidChinaGirl Feb 3, 09
          Nope.

Bought a 360 after seeing a $100 rebate on it. Also got another $116 back after reporting the retailer to the BBB for trying to go back on their rebate offer. So in the end, my 360 Premium cost less than a Wii. There are always ways, if you have the will.

          *so proud*

I do like what Gothic Girl said though. Capcom is really trying to sell this game on name alone. They could have easily made a new IP exclusively for the Wii and, you know, really made an effort instead of butchering an existing franchise.

Maybe not you particularly, but there are a number of kids out there who have their parents buy them everything they want. There are other people out there who save their money and decide to invest in a single console. For many of us, that console choice was the Wii.

I don't get why people cry about games like thing coming out, to be honest. It doesn't affect any of your lives at all, it opens up the audience for the franchise thereby giving the possibility of a sequel, and most importantly, it gives other people the chance to play the game, regardless of whether it's not longer "how you're supposed to play it."

I only have a PS3 and a Wii, so I can understand people who want this game, but if and when Dead Rising comes out for the PS3 is when I'll play it. If it doesn't, I just won't get it. I don't care much about this port.

For those saying that it's a crappy port, you have to remember that the Wii is incapable of doing things that the PS3 and the 360 can.

Yea, which is part of the reason it is a crappy port. The game loses something when you're not overwhelmed by the sheer number of zombies you have to face. That was what impacted me the most while playing it. Just how impossible a task this really seemed. Even dodging past them to get to a weapon could be a daunting task.

Now on the Wii you see maybe a dozen enemies on screen. Big deal We can mow those guys down in seconds, then more pop up out of no where. Yuck. That was ok back on the PS2 with games like Dynasty Warriors. But then again Dynasty Warriors your character was completely over powered. You spent more time looking at you and your flashy moves than your enemies. But Frank has no fancy moves. He is just regular guy reporter. So you spend most of the time looking at the zombies. So the pop in is going to be terribly noticable. And frankly quite annoying. No doubt this will be critically panned simply based on the comparison to the 360 version. And the only people that will buy it are those that can't or won't get a 360.

As for coming to the PS3, maybe DR2. But seems unlikely at this point that they would port it to the PS3.
