In a recent interview with Tavis Smiley, musician Prince talked about his opinion of the Guitar Hero games and how he turned down Activision's offer to have his songs in their games. Go to the source for the full interiew

Tavis: Thank you. What do you make of this Guitar Hero?

Prince: Oh. (Laughs.) Well, I ain't mad at them. I hear it made, like, $2 billion and they came to us and offered us a very small portion of that. But I just think it's more important that kids learn how to actually play the guitar. It's a tough instrument -- it's not easy. It took me a long time, and it was frustrating at first. And you just have to stick with it, and it's cool for people who don't have time to learn the chords or ain't interested in it, but to play music is one of the greatest things.

To create something from nothing is one of the greatest feelings, and I would -- I don't know, I wish it upon everybody. It's heaven.

I don't know why they keep asking real musicians about Guitar Hero. You think they're going to praise that facade of an instrument lesson? Prince is one of the best performers in history, and I respect what he's saying about music and the art itself, but why even print his word about Guitar Hero?

Because whatever the genre, whatever the game, it's always got SOME grounding in reality man. The idea has come from somewhere very real, no matter how sur-real or crazy the game might be. With something like guitar hero, the origins are obvious. It's a cheapened guitar. Now regardless of that, they're gonna ask people, always, who are actually living the real thing, if the manufactured thing matches up in anyway.

Also, marketing, advertising. It doesnt matter how good or bad Guitar Hero is. It doesnt matter what Prince says about it. People are gonna couple the two names together. Everyone's a winner.

I know they are going to ask them. What I said was I don't know why they do it, because they generally all have the same feelings on it.

Well like I said man, it's all marketing. It makes a buzz about the game. People love a bit of drama.

He's a black activist/news reporter, and he has his own talk show. He's the guy who interviewed Prince.

Ah right. Well, the fact that we're talking about him now shows that he shares in the publicity. It's not a conspiracy or anything, dont get me wrong it's just how it works; couple the names together and it makes a bigger splash.
