Speaking with Weekly Famitsu is their issue this week, Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura talked about how the Kingdom Hearts series got its start and the series now, given the recent release of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the Nintendo DS in Japan.

One of the more interesting things said?

quote Nomura
Actually, the first weapon I showed Disney was a chainsaw. It was this chainsaw-like weapon that I had a rough sketch of when I first showed my concepts to Disney. Everyone got this scrunched-up look on their face and nobody said a word in the entire room. Dead silence. And I thought 'No, I guess this wouldn't work, huh?

How did the concept behind Kingdom Hearts, one of Square Enix's most successful new concepts in recent years, come about? "I don't remember the details, but I was talking with [current Square Enix corporate executive] Shinji Hashimoto and Hironobu Sakaguchi," producer Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu magazine in an interview. "The topic came up that it'd be nice if we could make a game with Disney. I had been wanting to make an original action RPG by that time, and I had had the basic game system for KH in my mind for a while by that point. I thought it'd be a good opportunity for me, so I raised my hand and told them to let me handle it."

Normally I consider him the man who destroyed both Final Fantasy AND Disney franchises (no small feat to accomplish), but I gotta give him props for bringing a chainsaw wielding character before the Disney ruling class.

"This is the key to opening people's hearts!" *RRRRRR*

"And this is the chainsaw to shredding their hearts apart" *RMMMRRMMMMRRRRRMMMMMMM* [/chainsaw noise apparently]

I wish it was a chainsaw -- then I'd probably give a crap.

Why is the chainsaw becoming so popular lately? Gears, perhaps? :S

Eh, the keyblade's decent, although I can't really see how it'd hurt someone.

Chainsaws are always popular. Hell, that's the only reason why I clicked on the link to the article. Imagine my disappointment...

I don't remember too many chainsaws being used a decade ago. :S

Warhammer 40K was the first to use the idea of a chainsaw as a sword type weapon, which they call chain-swords, and they also have chain-axes and stuff too.

... What the *bleep*, Nomura? Chainsaws? In a game that has Disney characters?

I'll just lump that together with your leather, belt and zipper and giant foot fetishes, manladies and this terrible, terrible mistake, you strange little man.

Yes, lets find out what the Disney characters are really made of...literally.

Honestly this sounds like a screwed up idea from start to finish. How did he ever get this in his head?

Pooh is made of stuff and fluff if that helps :3

A chainsaw woulda been cool. The keyblade is like a sword and the game doesn't have gore, and if they did include it, the chainsaw would be perfect for slicing up heartless

Whats with all the Kingdom Hearts hate? I think it was a great game that took aspects from RPGs and successfully merged them with Disney characters.

I agree with that, and I think a chainsaw would've been a bad idea for the game anyway. That kinda weapon is a little unorthodox, and Sora's fighting style would've had to be completely different.

Please, if any of our fellow artists and/or (decent) photoshoppers would like to make some KH + Gears artwork for us, make it so. I will love you forever.

    I love the idea.

Maleficent:This...This is it! The true Darkness!!!
    *Turns into a dragon*

Sora:*dumps cigarette into the ground, Jumps up and cuts off her head*

    Donal and Goofy: D:

Sora:*Cuts off both their heads* Fags.

You can say lumping Disney with chainsaw-type non-innocence would be silly, but throwing Sephiroth and other supposedly hardcore type characters in with the ninja mickey mouse and key to the heart faggotry failed just as much.

At the end of the day it's a lose-lose IMO, regardless of whether there are people willing to overlook it.

no it didnt, seeing how Square developed it. why wouldnt they put in FF characters into a game they were making? if it was pure Disney characters, it would have been totally stupid.

I'm not talking about franchise; it's about character. Sephiroth was the insane badass of FF7 who was trying to destroy the world and who mercilessly killed Aerith. Putting him in Kingdom Hearts is like having Agent Smith in the Teletubbies.

Don't get me wrong, some people don't mind it; hell, some enjoy it. I'm just saying that's why a chainsaw blade isn't so ridiculous as some people make out and why I can never be interested in Kingdom Hearts. When Darth Vader showed up in SCIV I just completely gave up on it. Crossovers and the like are fine but some things take it to a ridiculous level I think and KH is one of them. I like sausages and I like Ice-Cream; throwing them together doesn't always result in greatness though xD

what if instead of Disney it was like, FF and RE characters? would that change anything?

No. It would still be too mish-mashed without reason for me to be interested. Something like MK vs. DCU (regardless of whether the game itself kind of sucked) makes sense as a crossover because they're both full of characters with special powers and share a few themes.

Capcom vs. Marvel, for the same reason (I know they're both fighting games but if they made an RPG or something with Marvel and Capcom characters (the ones from the game anyway) it would work too.)

RE and FF makes no sense though xD Not to me anyway.
