Fumito Ueda, the mastermind behind Ico, Shadow Of The Colossus and the upcoming The Last Guardian talked with G4 during the Tokyo Game Show about one of his favorite games. As it turns out, he is a big fan of Half-Life 2. He also said that he would be interested in making a FPS. So, what would a Fumito Ueda FPS look like?

"There was variation in terms locations," said Ueda, "and also the way of storytelling in the game. Usually, you have to incorporate storytelling with constraints, but the way they [Half-Life 2 developer Valve] implemented constraints was something different that I enjoyed, compared to other games."

Much of the storytelling in Valve's games takes place through non-traditional means. You aren't pulled away from the action to watch a scene play out in letterbox or forced to look in a direction. The cut-scenes unfold around you and you are the camera.

I know a lot of people would roll their eyes at this and say, "Ugh, another shooter."

... not me. I think this would be awesome!

An FPS by this guy would be the most artistic and majestic breath of fresh air the genre has EVER seen.

Absolutely. I doubt his approach would be all run 'n' gun and kill/destroy/blow up everything in sight. I couldn't even imagine what this guy could come up with. I hope he makes it.

Agreed, not that there's anything wrong with a good run and gun game, but this guy can make a truly unique experience if he gets full creative freedom.

The fact he mentioned Half-Life 2 says a lot. Half-Life 2 is about as close to mature and well written storytelling the FPS genre has ever seen. You can already tell he wouldn't make a Halo or Call of Duty, if anything his shooter may lack shooting altogether albeit for a few scenes where you legitamately have to. First person is a great method of storytelling as it puts you there, many just don't understand that and are like "WHOA COOOL EXPLOSIONNSS!!!" and just forget about writing something memorable.
