Mass Effect 2 Secrets Revealed
10 hours 18 mins ago
In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Quantic Dream's David Cage discussed the upcoming Heavy Rain, whether games are "as capable as films at producing meaty, intellectual content", why love is an important aspect of the game, and why he believes the game's sex/nudity scenes were neccessary.

Eurogamer: You said you were not afraid to show nipples. Does that mean you're confirming nipples in Heavy Rain?
Cage: Haha. Why are so many people obsessed with sex? The rule I give myself is everything is allowed as long as it makes sense in context. As long as it is not gratuitous, as long as it tells something about the story or the characters.
Do you know in real life when two people fall in love they may end up making love? That's the kind of thing that happens. Why not in a game? Why should it be treated differently? I am doing a game that will be rated 18+. What should I hide when I'm rated that way?
Eurogamer: Certainly not nipples.
Cage: Certainly not nipples! Haha. That's a good answer," David said. "But again, it's not showing nipples for the sake of sex, it's just to say, "OK, does it tell you something about the character? Does it add to the experience?" It's not about creating this teenage feeling of "Oh look, she's naked! It's so funny! And then laugh like an idiot about it. It's really about her as a character: real, vulnerable. It tells you something about her.

If it works in the game, then put it in. What's the difference when it's put in movies? Is it artistic? 90% of the time it's not. Sex sells and the movie industry does a damn fine job making money off that. People need to wake up and realize that games aren't just for kids anymore, most of those kids have grown up and want more mature games. And those kids who've now grown up are...oh my gosh!!!....having sexual intercourse!
I'm not saying this is the majority of gamers, but definitely a lot. I think he's just frustrated by the pervasiveness of that mentality.
He wants to bring both sides in. Pretty unheard of in games. Mass Effect comes to mind -- look what happened with Mass Effect 2. Makes us look like a bunch of *bleep*ing idiots.
Okay, well maybe it does. I'm glad that he's against gratuitous or unnecessary sex and nudity.
But still, I don't care for that stuff in my entertainment games. I still had better be able to avoid those scenes altogether, or my characters may face an untimely death.
Silly David Cage.
sex in video games=unnecessary but good.
sex WITH video games= unnecessary. and possibly painful
