If you were wondering why Final Fantasy XIII has been in development for so long, wonder no more! Square Enix's Yoshinora Kitase revealed to Dutch OPM that putting Final Fantasy XIII on PS2, then having to start from scratch again on PS3, cost the team about a year and a half.

Kitase also discussed the DLC rumors, facts on the 360 and PS3 versions, and how happy he is that FFXIII is finally finished.

Go to the source for the full interview and scans.

The Dutch version of Official Playstation Magazine has conducted an interview with Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase as we mentioned a few days ago.
Thankfully our new best friend, Shlizar Axis, has scanned the entire feature as well as translating the interview. Inside it, Kitase confirms the DLC rumour was true as well as revealing a few other interesting facts such as the PS3 and 360 versions of the game using different engines apparently. This seems odd as Square said Crystal Tools was developed to work with both the PS3 and 360 as well as other platforms but whatever he says.

I love how the PS2 still has titles coming out for it, I mean, not really any great ones anymore, but I love how the PS2 is still standing and hasn't completely died yet.

Thank God it wasn't continued on PS2 though, the graphics probably wouldn't have been nowhere near as good as thye are now.

The PS2 is impressive, but what were they thinking with this?

Why are you guys acting so strangely? Clearly the game would have been far different simply from a technical standpoint.
I'm sure once they decided they were going to put it on the PS3 instead lots of things changed too.

      Thank you.

This article shows some screenshots of the PS2 version, and while it has the same theme, its pretty obvious that the PS2 version wouldn't look anywhere near as good as the PS3/360 ones.

And that was near the beginning of development, so thousands of things still needed deciding. I really think this game is unbelievably impressive, especially since it filled a blue ray disc, that takes skill.

I'm really surprised Square thought they could fit another FF onto the PS2. I mean when you look at how long it took them to get FFX and FFXII out, I mean there was no way.

I really don't think time was a factor of "fitting" a game on a particular console. You people do realize developers know what general limitations they're dealing with on a particular console before they start making the game for it don't you? You think the reason FFX and FFXII took so long was because they wanted to make a larger game or something? No, they just wanted it to be polished. And that required two full sessions of voice capture for different languages as well as the obvious design and building of all the different areas in the game, writing in the game, the list goes on and on.

You guys are ridiculous. I'd like to see what your turn around would be on designing a game like this. You guys complain so much about how much time it takes them to make a game, do you want it to be good? Do you want it to be better than the last game they gave you and you loved? Or do you just want them to get it out as quickly as possible. Oh the sense of entitlement is strong in these comments.
