The Sonic everyone knows and loves is back in the first true sequel to the original series since 1994 (though the story is said to actually pick up after Sonic & Knuckles).

Gamespot gets the scoop; a teaser trailer is here, too.

The announcement of a new Sonic the Hedgehog game is always news, but with the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, the folks at Sega are taking a novel approach by marrying old-school Sonic gameplay and new-school delivery. Sonic 4 will be a 2D game with 3D visuals for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii and will be distributed as a downloadable game upon its release this summer. To learn more about what to expect from the game, we spoke with Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough.

I would love a limited edition disc based version that came with a modified PS3/360 controller in the shape of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive controller.

I have faith that this Sonic game will be great!

But I really do have faith in this, I just want that damned running animation fixed >.>

I don't have faith in it, tbh. Were this before the Werehog fiasco I might have been able to open myself up to it but until I know more I'm giving it a wide birth. I hope it'll turn out how we've all been dreaming for so long but I can't bring myself to trust them again. You've hurt me too many times, SEGA

It's like they always get the concept right, and they know what is missing yet they go out of their ways to make the games suck. I mean Unleashed had some of that 2d platforming, kickass, but the werehog. It's like they wanted sonic to fail or something, no one is that stupid to think turning a hedgehog into a mutt would be a good idea.

Here's hoping that Sega finally got some sense knocked into them after....how many Sonic games they made since Adventure?

Too many, that's all I know. Too *bleep*ing many.

In all honesty though I think the only reason they went down this route was a money issue. After gaining so little on past titles to make it a downloadable one and with such a short development time stinks of desperation, to me anyway.

Well, this certainly has my attention. Glad it's -somewhat- easily attainable, seeing as it will be availible via Wiiware, xBox Live Arcade, and PSN. Just hope it's not something that'll disappoint us like some of the games had.
