IGN and THQ have been discussing their latest plan for the gaming market in the form of partial game downloads, in which players can download parts of a game for $29.99, moving onto new areas if they so choose, or opting to buy the complete game for prices upto $120, Not sure how this would sit with gamers.. could this be the nail in THQ's coffin?
Brian Farrell: Yeah, and again, stay tuned for further announcements. I think it's the big challenge that the gaming industry represents so rather than fighting it we're going to embrace it. I'm sort of free forming -- I'm not announcing a new strategy. But what we've created with things like MX vs. ATV Untamed is a huge world with a ton to do. And then we have the gamer say, "Hey, I've gotta separate myself from $60 in order to enjoy that whole thing." So why not break it down into chunks, right?
We could probably sell a boatload of them in boxed products or online at -- pick a price point -- $29.99. And if you want this part of the world it's another X and if you want this part of the world it's another Y. And let people eat off the menu that they want. It's all about the gamer, right? It's not about what we want. Frankly, there's an opportunity from a business standpoint. I think everyone can win. Gamers pay for what they want and from a publisher's standpoint, we've got this big, open world that some people won't pay $60 for, but some might pay $40 for a portion of it. Or some people will pay $140 because they want to see everything. That's what's happening in some of the online markets and that's what we're thinking about.

This is one of those things that is SO dumb that you SERIOUSLY wonder if they can REALLY be THAT damn stupid.
