Spiegel.de recently published an interview with Heavy Rain director David Cage. An interesting bit was revealed when he was confronted with the fact that Heavy Rain's levels are so nightmareish.

"I don't even want the players to have fun when playing. There are so many games that revolve arround fun, this is getting boring. I want the players to live through emotions. I've built the game like an emotional rollercoaster ride."

Thing is I had fun. There was an inherent satisfaction and fun to be had from completing things. Yes overall the game left me emotionally drained but sadness and fear weren't the only emotions I felt playing Heavy Rain.. To say he doesn't want people to have fun is disregarding the sadists that find fun and pleasure in the pain of others, to them Heavy Rain was the comedy game of the year.

Depends what he means by fun I guess. I mean if you come out of the game satisfied then does that count as fun?

I think David Cage is a little overdramatic in any case

The man's a brilliant lunatic, he should be locked in a developers office and kept away from media at all costs.

I think I get what he's saying. In the general sense, fun usually brings to mind images of people smiling and being wild and doing little thinking.

Fun is generally about being carefree, something Heavy Rain is clearly not about. Of course he wants his game to be enjoyed, but he wants it to take a toll on the player as well I'm sure. To me, I can be greatly affected by a movie or game and still have "fun." Even if it's a saddening type effect. Being a human is fun.

I think the guy merely meant fun as in the "Yehaw" smiling, happy fun. He didn't want the generic entertainment that most video games provide, but instead wanted to provide a game that was emotionally enthralling instead of just regular old entertainment.

He;s hopefully making a distinction between fun an enjoyment here. Although that line is so thin to begin with it's hard to really grasp exactly what he means.

The wya I gathered it he's basically saying he doesn't want people to just be having the time of their life as they're playing throughout it, sure you may think 'wow' or have some sense of satisfaction, but it isn't intended to just be generally 'fun'.
