Thomas Grip is the lead programmer over at Frictional Games, the creators of the survival horror video game Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Questional's Dom Cook sat down with Thomas and grilled him about Frictional Games' history, current developments, and of course attempted to get a sneak peak to whats to come!

The core team started out as three people, was then reduced to two (just me and Jens) and has now grown to five people. We all work from home and I have actually never met two of our employees in person. Not sure I would even recognize them on the street! :) I actually only meet Jens face-to-face once a month or so. All our communication is over phone or IM.

The core team is not all that work on the game though. For example we have a musician, Mikko Tarmia, that have done music for all our games. We also use freelance artists over time periods when needed, employ a writer, foley artist and so on. So in the end there is quite a lot of people who have worked on the game, but few who have been involved full time.

What I found so cool about the company was they don't even have an office. They've been able to make their company and products successful with a small team, communicating solely through phone/email/msn. Sort of gives all start-ups out there something to strive for.

YES that was my favourite answer, I had no idea it was such a small team and they all worked from their own homes. Blew my mind. Amazing how such professional products could come from a team that have barely met each other, if at all!

Anyway, it was a great honor to interview these folks. I know they'll go far in the industry. Easily.

Jesus, the only interaction these people have to make the games is over IM/Calls/Email? Yet they make horror games that stay way more true to the genre than anything Capcom or Konami could throw together nowadays? I can't wait to see what Frictional Games can do next, whether it be turning Amnesia into a series as they did with Penumbra, or making a completely different horror game in yet another unique setting .
