In the past few days it seems the PS3 has officially been hacked at last. Almost out of no where did news of a USB Stick/Modchip that allowed your console, be it fat or slim, to back up and play PS3 games off your PS3's internal HDD or even an external HDD. Obviously everyone took it with a grain of salt but people have reported it to work. Apparently the device tricks your PS3 into thinking it is a dev console using some of Sony's own (repurposed) tech.

While this hack, dubbed the "PS Jailbreak," works it is not perfect. For example, it does not work for all PS3 games. Apparently "Oz Mod Chips," tested 12 games, and 2 didn't seem to start because of having at least one file over 4 GB. There are workarounds to some issues, though. Below are two clips of it in action:

Many have tried, and many have failed. The PS3 has remained totally un-hacked... until now. On the morning of the 19th of August 2010 we received a package at our store with a little software dongle and some instructions on how to get it working. We knew this would be huge, but not this huge. We had been hearing scene rumors of something like this in the works, but of course until we actually got our hands on it, it was all a bunch of rumors that meant nothing. Our website totally crashed from the insane number of hits, we received calls from news papers, gaming companies, we didn't sleep for 2 days just to keep up with emails!

- PS Jailbreak is a USB plug and play solution that installs in seconds, keeping your valid warranty seal intact.
- Easy to use installer and GUI takes you step by step.
- Compatible with all production models FAT and SLIM. Supports all regions: USA, JAP, PAL and KOREA.

- PS Jailbreak disables forced software updates and will never brick your console.
- Supports all games (it does not allow backups of blu-ray movies, DVD movies, or past consoles games)
- Backup games to your internal hard drive or external hard drive through USB, and boot directly off GUI. Eliminating the need for expensive blu-ray burners and costly blank media.

- Play backups off your hard drives 2x as fast as off the blu-ray drive. This eliminates lags and glitches to provide you with smoother game play.
- Open up your console to a new generation of homebrew applications. Load homebrew apps/games off any USB hard drive/flash drive.
- Fully updatable with new features/updates by connecting PS Jailbreak to any computers USB port.

I'm afraid I'm out of the loop here. Why is this important?

I guess because the PS3 has been hack free for so many years that it's like OMG a nerd hacker finally hacked the PS3.

I personally don't give a shit because I never use hacks on gaming machines.

Indeed. Geohotz was working on the PS3 (same guy that made the iphone/touch jailbreak) and so I guess everyone expected him to launch the PS3 into the same sort of position where everyone cracks it. And while he quit it's still a possibility if someone figures out how to do this with a normal usb stick.

Either way it's exciting news for some people..

Because some people don't like paying for stuff, so now they won't have to (or soon enough, anyway).

This is great news for me, I couldn't buy a PSP because you couldn't buy games for it anywhere around here without the anti-piracy system turning on and giving me the middle finger, don't get me wrong, I'm not cheap, If (and that's a really big "IF") there was a store within a 1000 km radius that sells original copies of games then I sure as hell would buy them, I wouldn't wish pirated copies on my worst enemy.

While interesting, I guess this can be used illegally can't it? Though it's a great method to back-up games without scratching that pricey blu-ray disc.

I thought Blu-rays where super resistant to scratches?

There are, I have never seen a single blu ray disc with an actual scratch.

I thought blu-rays were really vulnerable to scratches... they were originally planned to come out with protective plastic over them like PSP UMD's? iirc

No actually this was a feature they really displayed alot when the ps3 was first being released. They even would take screwdrivers and steel wool and try to F&$* a disc and it still worked. But it's not impervious, I know my mgs4 disc is starting to have some problems now as it freezes now during the credits... but no, they are extremely resistant to scratches.

Now to wait for someone to make a version that can be downloaded and run off any thumbdrive so that it gets popular and people make homebrew...

Console hacks help out Blockbuster in this ailing time for them; why won't people think about the poor brick and mortar rental stores? :

I guess taking off the "other os" option to make it harder to hack didn't work out so well. Happened anyway.

So now that is happened without the otherOS option, can I have my Ubuntu back?

This has other uses as well. Eventually they'll find a way using this to launch 3rd party programs/games and some other cool stuff and then homebrew will start to sprout.

So Sony won the lawsuit against some Australian online distributor of the USB thing.

But the thing is, the source of the hack has already been uploaded online long before this happened. I have no doubt in my mind someone will modify this to be convenient as possible. There's already an alternative the the PS3Jailbreak by using a "Teensy++" USB board, which is something that Sony will NEVER be able to ban from online. There's also an alternative using a Nokia 9000 phone lol <<.

Better luck next time, Sony/PS3, you had a good run. I mean- a REALLY good run (compared to 360 and lolWii).
