It's only taken a few weeks/months and custom firmware is already starting to pop up for the PS3. I'll bet you Sony will be pissed when they find out. The firmware adds a new section to the XMB, called Homebrew. In this new tab you can find modding related tools, such as 'Install New Homebrew' and Back-up Managers (which let you back up games to your HDD or External Storage Media and play them as if they we're on a disc from the Game tab on the XMB) among other things.

German developer Dark Monkey claims to have programmed the very first PS3 Custom Firmware! He is calling his release MFW (Mod Firmware), and will be releasing all details and packages within a few days. In the meantime, he has posted the above video showing his BETA version running on a PS3 Console!
