Xbox 360's outselling PS3 in UK since GTA IV launch

Benedict | May 29, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
The Xbox 360 this year has been dragging it's way in front of the Sony PS3 in the UK, because of the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV. The GTA Series has been popular among fans and has made them get the console Xbox 360 to play it. Because of this, 360 has been outselling PS3's.
Sales of Xbox 360 consoles are 18 per cent ahead of the PlayStation 3 in the UK since the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV, Chart-Track told Eurogamer today.

In even better news for Microsoft, official GTA IV sales figures for the first four weeks also reveal that the Xbox 360 is the format of choice for UK gamers, with 57 per cent of the total sales of the game on 360, compared to 43 per cent on PS3.

Current Chart-Track panel figures place sales of the game in the UK at over 1.3 million, meaning around 750,000 copies have shifted on Xbox 360, and around 570,000 on PS3. To put that into context, in under four weeks Rockstar’s opus has shifted almost as many copies as last year’s best-seller, FIFA 08 - a game which launched on every format under the sun.

The effect on driving hardware sales has also been more dramatic on 360 than PS3, according to Chart-Track’s figures. Comparing sales of both consoles for the four weeks prior to GTA IV’s launch to the four weeks since its launch, hardware units have risen on 360 by 47 per cent, compared to just eight per cent on PS3 - though it’s fair to point out that the release of GT 5 Prologue had already given PS3 a significant boost in the weeks leading up to GTA IV’s debut.

Looking at the year to date, the picture looks much rosier for Sony. Taking all 21 weeks of 2008 into account, sales of PlayStation 3 in the UK are 10 per cent ahead of Xbox 360. Prior to the launch of GTA IV, the PS3 boasted a 20 per cent lead on 360, so the gap is narrowing.

With exclusive downloadable content due on Xbox 360 later this year, it looks like this might be the deciding factor for many. But will it be worth the huge sums Microsoft paid Take 2? Let us know what you think.

The most expensive Xbox is £259.99 while the most expensive (and the cheapest) PS3 is £299.99

Though with bundles you can buy a 360 premium with 4 games for £239 then you can get GTA IV thats 5 games and a console for £270 where as you can buy a PS3 by itself for £299, its no wonder the 360 is selling well.

Not really, maybe they underestimated how much the year headstart would really affect things, i think perhaps Sony thought that since the Xbox had relatively slow and poor sales that the 360 would, and now the 360 is down in price more people are just going to buy it... I can see once it gets cheap enough even the Japanese market will adopt the Xbox 360 but thats yet to be seen, the PS3 is an amazing piece of kit but in the market where a Wii is £179.99 with a game, the Xbox 360 is £239 with 4 games, the PS3 standing tall at £299 without games i know i wouldn't go with the PS3 if i didn't have one right now.

I'm pretty sure that games and consoles and the like are more expensive in Europe, so the cheapest choice is expedient.

I'm sure MGS IV will turn those numbers around rather quickly. I don't think there is really ever going to be a "winner" here.

Don't be so sure from just looking on Neoseeker lots of the people that want a PS3 for MGS4 have got one, either for another game out before it i don't think the numbers will jump massively... GTA IV would have probably had a bigger impact on console sales and it did nothing for shifting PS3's which is something everyone predicted it would.

Well that just Neoseeker man. There are plenty of dudes who will decide to get a PS3 because of MGS4.

Actually i have found it to be the case, Neoseeker isn't the whole world but it is a pretty big cross section of the online world. From what i have found lots of people want MGS4 but lots got a PS3 for GTA IV not for thise game as they are so close together release date wise, the rest what MGS4 but not enough to buy a PS3 there are very little that are still without a PS3, sure there are some thats why there are bundles being released but enough to make the bundles worthwhile i don't think so to be honest.

I honestly doubt 'everyone' already has a PS3. If that were true, I'm pretty sure total sales would be a LOT higher than they are now.

There are plenty of gamers who don't access this website. Using Neo as a global reference is like buying a car purely off of looks.

May I ask who cares? Seriously, its always going to go back and forth which console is doing good each month, its nothing special. I agree with Red here.
