SCE president says "Were re-thinking our policy for paying for exclusives"

Final Blade | May 31, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 Company Misc
Its been quite a ride, or as many gamers feel, a stressful time with Sony and how they operated with exclusives. Many PS gamers around the globe wished and wanted Sony to get off their ass and pay for exclusive rights. Well after losing GTA4, DMC4 and other once-exclusive titles, it seems they finally are "re-evaluating paying for PS3 exclusives".

However Kaz Hirai also states this will also be discussed by the publishers and that the exclusive deal would have to be their decision not Sony's.
But knowing Sony will be paying for exclusive, if they agree, would ensue no more exclusives being lost to the competition.
Q: What’s your policy on securing games exclusively for the PS3 from third parties? Because Phil Harrison changed the policy towards not paying for exclusives. Is that still the case?

KH: That’s something that we can re-evaluate, but it’s also something that the publishers need to make a business decision on. Ultimately, it becomes a dialogue – if it makes sense for them to go exclusive, that’s a business decision that they need to make. But generally speaking, because of the investments that publishers need to make in this round of hardware, it’s going to be more difficult for publishers to make that decision. Where we come into the picture is to have that dialogue with the third-party publishers, to say: “OK, what can we do together if it’s not exclusive that makes the PS3 version of the game more compelling for the consumers than any other version?” Let’s face it – all the games are coming out on a Blu-ray disk which has 50Gb capacity, so let’s put in some making-of content, or maybe additional levels. Also, it really becomes important for the first-party studios to really come up with some envelope-pushing, genre-defining content.

About damn time... I have never quite understood the whole loyalty thing, i mean it is nice and very awesome to have a friendly partnership with a developer like the whole Rockstar/Sony thing but when you lose games through being far to understanding its just a kick in the teeth.

Waits for the Insomniac, Inconito, Team ICO and Suckerpunch buyouts to happen after the new policy goes through, they need to have a line up of developers that matches the teams that Microsoft have under their Game Studio's brand.

Funny you say that, since you were stating "Sony gets games off of Loyalty and respect, not buying" at one point.

too late, all the quality exclusives have picked their side.

Although its about time they re think their strategy. However MS can always out bid Sony.

Thats the problem, it is very good that Sony are re-thinking this whole thing but at the end of the day, there is really nothing stopping Microsoft offering Polyphony Digital $1 billion to make Gran Turismo exclusively for the Xbox brand and thats where Sony will fall short, a new policy is one thing, finding the money to get all the previously "loyal" developers to stay on the Playstation is another.

There is something stopping Microsoft from doing it... Sony owns Polyphony.

        I think it's a good idea, but it's a bit too late.

I do think GT will stay exclusive. With or without money. But I agree. It is about time Sony started paying for exclusives. In my oppinion, Microsoft were lucky that Sony didn't buy GTA or DMC. Otherwise, the Xbox wouldn't be doing as well. IMO. I'm not a fany boy btw. ¬¬.

Took long enough to get their heads out of their asses. They have to realize that their PS3 is not nearly as popular as the PS2 and thus they need to work at making the PS3 the superior console if they want to get anywhere, and to do that they need exclusives, its the most important aspect of a console that sets it apart from its competitors.

Immediately, I would say these fools are just a little bit late to the party, but thinking about it a little more, I think Sony is in a good position right now. You have to look inside the numbers. XBOX 360 is not that far ahead of PS3 right now, its less than 6 million units in front, and Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't out yet. Neither is Final Fantasy XIII. I think its a good idea for Sony to lock down what they can in the future, because thats obviously when they are going to have to beat Microsoft.

So many gamers who don't understand the business expected PS3 to come out and immediately beast the competition, based on the strength of the PlayStation2. PS2 sold 120 million units over 7 years, and its still selling. Its not logical to think that PS3 would put up these same numbers so soon, however I feel that with all the bad press, the "overpriced" PS3, with the lack of software support, has done a decent job of hanging around, so to speak. With what looked like a landslide for the 360 early on, Microsoft really hasn't pulled away as much as I think they needed to, and if Sony is anywhere near them by the time this year is done, I think they have a great chance in the future of moving in front.

I love how iLL gets thumbs down for this. I thumbed you up, you are right. This will prevent things like KH3 and others not to be ported. Hell it locks up GTA5 in the future. This is good news.

iLL gets another thumb up from me for pointing out what I've been thinking for ages: to expect a console to sell millions in a relatively short timeframe is definitely clouded judgement. I'll admit the PS3 hasn't done as well as it could have, but Sony's done a remarkable job keeping it in the game.

Hmm, I never got where all the "OH NOZ SONZE R LOZING EXCLUSIVES" cam from. They lost a few at the beginning but I don't recall any noteworthy PS3 that has gone multiplatform or 360 exclusive any time recently. If people examined the 360 it too has lost several exclusives

GTA4, DMC4, and others I might have missed along the way. But to add this stop God of War 3 being Ported. While this may have been later than most wanted, it is relatively early, not even 2 years yet for Sony PS3. So this does help things, in the future.

My mistake iLL, forgot about that while posting potential titles that might go multiplat.

God of War is Sony's IP. It isn't going anywhere.

GTA was not an exclusive it has never been exclusive i mean it is a game that for an "exclusive" has miraculously been on so many platforms... Dreamcast, Playstation, Xbox and PC aswell as Gameboy, i mean GTA can go anywhere and as it showed Rockstar wanted it on two platforms.

I never said it was full exclusive but it was a timed exclusive which was my point below.

Yeah but those happened ages ago, when was the last time Sony lost a exclusive recently? 360 has lost more than a few titles themselves including Lost Planet, Bioshock, Saints Row 2 and Haze. So why do people instantly point the finger at Sony and say that the PS3 lost all its exclusives to the 360?

You're right. Sony hasn't lost any exclusives recently. And GTA IV was never going to be a Sony exclusive. Maybe Final Blade is talking about losing the DLC parts. *Shrugs* I myself don't really appreciate this exclusive business, unless it's a first party game.

Saint Row 2 wasn't exactly an exclusive though. The first one yes, but I think after seeing some great titles for the PS3, Volitions decided to make it multiplat.

It doesn't really matter when it happen, but the fact it DID happen. Those titles were either exclusive or timed. And Sony lost what benefits it could have with them. Believe it not, if they stayed how they were the PS3 would be doing so much better than what it is doing.

I would say it is because the 360 still have lots of exclusives, when it loses one it still have 8 waiting to come out and even more already released, when Sony lost those exclusives it had nothing coming out and barely anything released that people would like to buy... Now Sony haven't lost many exclusives but neither have Microsoft.

I mean Saints Row was exclusive through circumstance there was no PS3 so it had to be on Xbox 360, same with Condemned and Lost Planet... The only real exclusive Microsoft have lost is BioShock but atleast they can say, we had it for a year before you guys...

Sony can't, they lost their exclusives long before any Playstation gamer got to play them...

As for Haze Microsoft didn't lose it, it just went from multiplatform to single platform and i think right now Microsoft are glad the game didn't come out on the 360.

Maybe because of GTA. After all, before this gen, GTA has always been a timed exclusive for Sony. GTA is the game that everyone knows about, so of course it will appear as a major loss to Sony.

Ace Combat was a huge series for PS2, but AC6 was 360 exclusive. However, the reason behind the switch was reasonable and smart.

From the sound of it, we will be hopefully getting new 'exclusive' content for multi-ports as well
