It shouldn't come as a surprise or shock to learn that the Playstation 3 loves Power... the Electrical kind that is, however you may be shocked to learn that the Playstation 3 uses five times as much energy as a refrigerator, which means those gamers that leave their Playstation 3 on for Folding@Home are looking at spending around $250 a year on extra electricity that they could have saved.

However don't think it's only the Playstation, the XBOX360 is no stranger to power either, and whilst not using as much as the PS3 (31.74kWh) the XBOX360 is a close second using 23.57kWh. The Wii on the other hand... is certainly last in the list of power sucking consoles, not even reaching 3kWh.

The Playstation 3 loves power... and there's the proof...

We’re all aware that the PlayStation 3 is an energy hog, but this is ridiculous: According to Australian consumer agency Choice the PS3 devours five times as much energy as a refrigerator.

Slumpy you forgot to mention, that the reason its not using much power is cause many people buy the system only to let it rot and collect dust in their closet. Truly a waste of money.

a ps3 uses around the same amount of power as PC
most ps3 users use their console only a couple hours a day, compared to computers being left on for hours (maybe even days) at a time

if people are worried by using their console too much, they may want to watch their PC use

Any ideas how much voltage/watts per hour a standard PC uses? I usually have my Laptop connected all day... maybe I should start unplugging it...

it varies, but the higher clocked the comp, the worser
laptops arent usually that bad, they run on battery power
even when using AVplugs, its still charging the battery

i use a laptop aswell krunal

Standard PC is about 250 watts, same as a PS3. If you've got a gaming rig though, much more. Mine uses about 400 watts, so well above the PS3.

Not directing this at anyone of course but you'd have to be an idiotic fanboy to try and put a positive spin on this.

lol, PS3's use power, new flash XD

Seriously though, it's no wonder tree-huggers hate the consoles, hopefully this'll make people remember to unplug the bastards instead of leaving them on standby as well. Good grief, they're like the Vergils of the electronics world

    More Power

I'll be damned if i have to go behind the back of the Tv cabinet to unplug the damn PS3 every time i finish playing it. I'll just turn it off like a normal Person.

Yeah, I just meant turning it off at the back (I always get confused, 'cause the PS2 slim-line had to be un-plugged so I got into the routine of doing that, and it stuck with me ) My mistake.

And still, 1.9 watts left on over all the time you're not playing the console for however long you have the thing adds up, I mean can anyone honestly say they're that lazy that they can run their finger over the stand-by button, but can't be bothered to flick a little swith at the back?

Don't need to, the controller has the home button on the controller to start the system on standby. Thats why its awesome. Besides I keep my nightlight on in my room til it dies. I find that it lasts longer that way.

Stand by doesn't even use that much voltage. 1 watt if I recall correctly.

I believe PS3's standby is less than one watt of power.

Edit: 1.9 watts. There's a great breakdown of power usage here:

I hit the switch at the back if that counts, I can't believe people are so lazy as to not be arsed to do that.

Oh and the refrigerator is a bad comparison, as far as products go that doesn't use all that much power

    Supernouva Jun 4, 08
Well, refrigerators tagged with the "Energy Star."

These days with all the technology that goes into refrigerators, you'd be surprised how much power they use.

It all equals out in the end though, as anyone with a proper home theatre setup and a PS3 can offset the extra electricity against the money saved in heating bills. The amount of heat my av receiver, tv and PS3 kick out make my room nice and toasty.
