Activsion: Guitar Hero: Metallica doesn't change their plans

Tyranitar24 | June 03, 2008 | News | Playstation 2 Playstation 3
Guitar Hero: Metallica was announced yesterday and Kotaku decided to try and get an answer out of Activision about the news today. When they spoke to Harmonix reps, they said that the game "doesn't change our plans" from the developer's announcement of last year. In July 2007, Harmonix made a deal with MTV and Metallica (announcement of last year) which is supposed to "showcase the incredible depth of the band's music."
When Activision stealth announced the release of Guitar Hero: Metallica via an SEC filing, fears of artist exclusivity gripped Rock Band fans. After all, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick had referred to Aerosmith as "proprietary" to the Guitar Hero format earlier this year.

While not giving outright confirmation that Metallica was free to roam on both Guitar Hero and Rock Band indefinitely, we were told that the announcement "doesn't change our plans" in relation to the developer's announcement from Summer of last year. In July of 2007, Harmonix announced a deal with MTV and Metallica that would "showcase the incredible depth of the band's music", with MTV Senior VP Paul DeGooyer saying the agreement would provide "not just one song by a player's favorite artist, but a carefully-chosen career-spanning array."

That statement also touted that "the range of Metallica songs that will be available to Rock Band players will allow them to play along as the history of the genre unfolds." Quantitative? Hardly.

Harmonix reps weren't willing to comment beyond supporting the already announced deal, so things may change at some point in the future. But for the time being, it appears that the four Metallica tracks currently available to Rock Band users probably won't be the last.

If they are, I think we know who to blame. Lars

Personally, and I think many people will agree, Metallica songs are better fit for download on RB instead of an entire game. Here's why: is there really any Metallica song out there that you can put in the opening venue? All their songs are so complex and hard so even on easy they would hard (for beginners anyways). Better fit for downloads IMO. By the time they get to the final venue, it'll probably be comprised of songs from the Master of Puppets album which would be downright impossible to play (especially "Battery" and "Leper Messiah")

And since a deal was indeed made they have to stick to that deal. There will be more tunes out for RB in the future no doubt. Its not like they're gonna release Metallica songs every month, you know? They are many bands that Harmonix has probably made deals with so they have to honor those as well.

...And Justice For All would be the in the final venue as would be quite a few songs from that album, its their most complex and technical album, its why Metallica's "One" was in the final venue in Guitar Hero 3.
