GamesRadar takes a look at the common masked hero: The hero has a scarred face, and he hides it all with a mask and sets out to save the world. GamesRadar has taken some heroes out of games and have criticized there masked look.

List is in the source.

See if you can guess what game we’re talking about: in the war-torn near future, a supersolider - outfitted in skin-tight armor - wages battle against legions of aliens/other supersoldiers. To protect his scar-ridden face, he dons a nondescript, yet sleek helmet, thereby rendering him mute and indistinguishable from everything else on sale. Give up? It’s a trick question.

You might remember our feature on the world’s most generic game character where we created our own Frankenstein-like world-saving hero. We’ll go deeper than that - today we’re scrutinizing the generic hero’s face mask from the last year or so, which are constantly way too similar across titles.

They left out Sektor, where you get a suit with a snazzy helmet as well.

And Big Daddies from Bioshock also fit into this category:)

But there not heroes are they? There enemies

Helmets are usually a shortcut, means you don't have to construct and animate the face.

Personally, I really don't mind masked heroes. It does not make all that much a difference to me.

Well Haze troopers are just a big group of soldiers, so they can't exactly include them, whereas Army of Two is jsut 2 people, so they can be counted as heroes IMO.

The masks in AO2 are essential to Rios and Salem as parts of their armour which needs to cover them head to toe so thats no reason to call them boring.
