There is a 9 minute loading screen in MGS 4 and Snake pops up smoking a cigarette as warnings and other things pop up on the screen. Snake will nudge his cigarette ash on the ground and a don't litter screen pops up and when he is smoking, there is a message telling you that smoking is bad. Kind of funny, isn't it?

During the 9-minute or so loading screen of Metal Gear Solid IV, gamers are treated to a close up view of old Snake sucking through cigarette after cigarette as game tips, warnings and public service announcements pop-up on the screen. They're certainly not worth sticking around to watch, but if you do you'll get two bits of wonderful hypocrisy. The first couple of times Snake taps his cigarette ash onto the unseen ground an message shows up telling you not to litter and to use an ashtray for your ash and butts. Then after about five minutes of him smoking you get a message about the harms cigarettes.

quote
[Smoking Warning]
Cugarette smoke has detrimental effects to you and those around you, particularly infants, children, and the elderly.

Have consideration for others when choosing to smoke.

Oh, and cancer, there's that too.

Sometimes I feel MGS games try to be a little too 'smart' for their own good.

9 minutes???? It's worse than I expected. Will we be watching more than playing here?

*Nine minutes while the game is installing. The actual cutscenes in the game aren't useless things such as that, and though some are a little longer than average game cutscenes, they're still very relevant to the story, and you're finding out new things all the while, so it's alright. Plus you can always skip them.

Cig ad is just something random to enjoy while the game installs to the system.

Ah, it's just a diversion from the first mandatory install? Okay, that makes more sense. Thanks for the heads up!

Well maybe they think that people will stop smoking and littering if they see a character from their favorite video game stop smoking and littering.

It doesn't quite work when Snake litters AND smokes on screen. XD
