Are games actually good for storytelling?

jam_sponge | June 16, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
GV takes a look at the different ways in which games can tell us stories, and tries to work out which way we're going to see more of in the future.

Should games have to tell stories, or should we just be content with having a gun to hold and stuff to jump over?
Gaming narratives will inevitably be compared to books and films, as they are the other significant storytelling mediums, and game-makers over the years have clearly taken inspiration from both of them when trying to tell a story. Can gaming ever live up to the tale-telling heights of other media? Should it be trying to?

Some games do a really good job of story telling and its what also helps the game to be much more fun. Such as uncharted for exsample. Amazing story.

To be honest, some games have better stories than films.

Games are some of the best storytelling devices out there, next to novels and Movies. Plus, they allow you to get inside the story, actually playing through it, so the level of depth you can involve yourself in the story is greater.

I disagree. Sorry but those games always tend to seem to have really short dull stories, they always feel disjointed to me. I would rather feel like the world around me is unfolding as I play. Unfolding like a movie or a book still seems to be the best way to me.

But others are entitled to their veiws, just as long as they don't decide it is the only way.

    Where did I go wrong?

I think I've heard some of my favorite stories come from videogames. Examples like Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, The Legend of Zelda, etc...They're just fantastic.

Actually, the plot/storyline behind the game is what interests me more than the actual gameplay . . . at least with most games (excluding the games I already know what the story is, things like movie-based games, etc.)

An example for me is Resistance 2. I'm not a shooter fan, but I have to get this one because I'm interested in the story behind the game (and have to continue with the series).

So, stories are what sells games to me. If it doesn't have a good one, then I find it boring and extremely lacking, and as if it's not something to enjoy but only something to pass the time when bored.

This is one of the stupidest articles...... articles just keep more and more *bleep*ing stupid. Some games need plot, and some dont. Contra, it doesnt need a plot, Final Fantasy needs a plot. Some games need and some dont. This is common sense, there is no need for an article for it, its like creating an article asking if there should only be shooting and sports games on the market, of course not we need variety you idiots. Some people dont care about the plot but some do and just getting rid of plots in video games is just the most dumbest thing I have ever heard wtf is WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?

some games must have stories (Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Zelda, Bioshock, Half Life etc.) some don't (all racing games, sort games NBA FIFA NHL, some shooters Halo, Serious Sam, Contra.)

If it wasn't for Uwe Boll, most video game storylines might actually make decent movie plots.

Well lets put it this way, I rarely watch movies because I find stories in games far better than most of these things they call movies these days.

On the contrary, I find you can pack much more story into a 40-hour RPG then a 2 hour movie.

Its just you need to pack it with a good story
