Decision Time: Storytelling or Freedom? Time to Choose

jam_sponge | June 18, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
This week's Decision Time looks at why gamers can't have their cake and eat it. Not content with games which make us feel like we're inside a movie, we now demand freedom of action and consequences to boot.

But what are the consequences of this in the long term? And do we really have to choose one or the other?

If you ask me we still don't have to choose. Some games are all for story, and others are all freedom. Some like GTA can do both.

Yeah, and that's why GTA is one of the best selling games out there. So with GTA, you could actually have your cake and eat it too.

Yep, as Play ISDF stated, there are different types of games. Some games offer freedom, some offer in-depth stories, some offer neither (are either sucky, or just the 'good fun' ones, like Rock Band or Guitar Hero). Some are able to blend freedom with an in-depth story. If they can successfully do that, they have the potential to sell like mad.

Fable was a great game with fun gameplay and tons of freedom..... but the plot was just ehhh.

I was thinking 'Fable' myself, but meh, it is actually fairly linear, really. At least compared to open worlds like Oblivion....The courses are all linear. The only non-linear aspect of it, is choosing to be the 'good guy' or the 'bad guy', and that was limited somewhat >_>

Fable 2, I hope that expands on what Fable 1 was, 10-fold >_>

Regardless it was still very fun to play and Fable 2 looks all the more appealing to me.

I think it's going to take a while for writers to catch up with the technology. Writing for an open game is different than writing a linear game, than writing a screenplay than writing a book etc. Once some great writers get a few under their belt we will start to see it happen more and more
