Diablo 3 In First Person

Coltrain | June 26, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
It is as good as confirmed - Diablo 3 will be announced over the weekend. And add this to your list of rumours, it will contain the option for a first person view.

There is an argument for the original style of the Diablo franchise to be retained. More recent games such as Titan Quest has sucessfully pulled off the feat, but it is one of few. The most successful combination has been in games such as Dawn Of War and Company Of Heroes, where you can zoom in to a soldier level. Hellgate: London was touted as a first person Diablo but failed to live up to expectations, more through execution than concept. And it was the first person Diablo that got people excited. Isomietic certainly doesn't seem to work within this style of game. The smart money is on a first person view option from an isometric view.
All Diablo needs is to be stepped into the modern day. The formula for success would look something like: Original Diablo voice chat / havok engine first person view = massive hit.

Sounds cool but also sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

That site doesn't have any distinguishable sources from what I can tell. Shit, I've been playing Diablo since I was five, and I haven't heard any of this stuff yet. I really don't believe it.

Blizzard has the Paris event in a few days where they're announcing a new game. They've also got a splash image teaser on their site that updates everyday, itself incinuiating the topics of the three major announcements; WotLK, SC2, and then something to do with Diablo. Diablo 3 domain has been bought out, music has been scored, and god knows what else proves the game IS coming. Blizzard however, hasn't said so yet, and refuse to do so. That's just how Blizzard does business.

Like I said, when it's coming out of Blizzard's press release from the event, I'll believe it.

Odd report at least the one on Neo had sources pointing to past events.

This reads more or less like

    quote
Diablo 3 this weekend, oh and because it's just mainly a large rumor right now I'll add my twist to it.
If D3 gets announced then yay, but it's already a given it'll be in development for at least 3-4 years or more with SCII still in production and WoW expansions taking priority for release years.

It's a bit odd to see people going on about it like fact when the hard sources aren't there yet. Hopefully it doesn't turn up like the prior Xbox rumors or Bioshock on PS3 rumors that ran for ages with only Bioshock showing an end result after going on and on.

Smart money would be betting on D3 being announced at Blizzard Worldwide Invitational this weekend. Last year's WWI had dozens of SC2 rumors surrounding it, and we all know how that turned out (although the SC2 rumors were from reliable sources in Korea). Of course, the whole blizzard.com front page mystery could very well just be big news on Wrath of the Lich King or SC2.

A first-person mode doesn't sound like something Blizzard would do though.

Ya that's the thing that is sort of preventing me from being excited about this -- an announcement alone isn't a big deal, because it'll be LONG time before its actually ready for release.

I mean, everybody figures that the game was coming eventually, so an announcement isn't that big of a surprise.

I take announcements pretty seriously, because it just makes me feel better that the game I want is actually coming, with physical evidence.

The StarCraft II cinematic teaser and 20 minute game play video almost made me shit my pants last year. It would be great if Diablo fans got that too.

I think this would be awesome, honestly.

I'd love to fight hordes of demons Oblivion-Style.

The leaked video on the net already from the event confirms we will not see some cheap escape from the 3rd person view, but instead it'll just be made with awesome and people will not just accept it, apparently people will beat their own families to play it if they can.

I guess when random sites make predictions they should stick to doing ones which actually make sense instead of going so far off the grid they come off as a joke.
