Full length movies will be available to download this Summer for PS3 owners, the US will be the first to get the treatment with Japan and Europe getting it at a later date. Better network features are promised as well

TOKYO (AP) -- Sony says it will start a movie download service for its PlayStation 3 home console this summer in the U.S.

Kazuo Hirai, who heads Sony Corp.'s video game unit, said Thursday the service will be offered in Japan and Europe at later dates, although details won't be available until next month.

Hirai said the company will strengthen its network services and further cut costs to achieve profitability in the Sony gaming business in the current fiscal year ending March 2009

    It's a very good idea, but I can't see it taking really off for a good few years yet. Internet speed simply remains too slow for people to choose to download movies rather than go to a shop and purchase them. Alright, for countries like Japan who have universally lightning-fast speeds it might be good, but for most of the Western world, speeds still aren't fast enough. Heck, I can't get any faster than 2MB, and most of the time it's around 512k. You'll be hard-pushed to find someone in the UK who has an internet-speed faster than 8MB.

    True. It'll probably take a few hours just to download a film.
    I suppose if you plan ahead it'll be ok. Start downloading the film on Friday to watch it on Saturday night.

      Course not. They'd go bankrupt ;;;

      I wonder if they'd offer a freebie though. Either an episode (I dunno if they'll be doing TV eps at all)....Or an old movie. For a limited time, of course...

      But yeah, DLing a 1080p movie? That'd be crasy >_> I have a 1080p movie that is just over an hour long, and it is like 2.4GB >_>

      Well, the 360 offers this service, so Sony has an uphill battle. Though they have their own studio for exclusive support....
