SCEE has confirmed that PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.40 will be available to download on July 2nd 2008. Firmware 2.40 will include in-game XMB and 2D Trophy Support.

In yet another press release today, SCEE has confirmed that Firmware 2.40 will be available to download on July 2nd 2008. Firmware 2.40 includes XMB access in-game. This means that you can access the PS3 menu at any time while playing most games, simply by tapping the PlayStation button on your controller. With 2.40, you can check if any of your friends are online (thanks to their own user profile), read and send messages, change some settings for games, all without having to quit the game you are playing. While you can't pause an online multiplayer game involving other people, you can rejoin play at any time when you've finished browsing.

Thats awesome, I guess Soon really is soon.

Question why is it that it says in Europe? I hope the world gets it on Wednesday.

Don't worry, FB, it's actually worldwide (or so it appears) on the 2nd. The Playstation Blog (blog.playstation.com) says it'll be released on the 2nd, and they always specify if it's for a particular region. So here's to the couple days of waiting!

EDITED = reason = region. If this comment shows twice, it's a bug, sorry, I had to edit it!

Hmm, I agree. There have been at least 5 different release dates flying about since the beginning of June. But if the date was on the playstation blog, this could be the real deal.

You guys should already know that this is confirmed by Sony themselves. The other so called dates were just rumors by people thinking they got the real info. Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe Officially stated it.

Is it just me, or are they mentioning in-game music absolutely nowhere? If in-game music is going to be there, that's arguably the most wanted feature.

in-game music is . . . I guess in there. They showed it off in the video walkthrough of the update.

I asked Jeff (Jeff Rubenstein, one of the guys in charge of the PSN) a couple questions about in-game music . . . Apparently in-game music is not really fully there. It's still up to each individual developer to put it in their game. If you try to play your music while in a game that doesn't support it, it'll ask you to leave the game. That's sad news for me.

Ok that blows huge time. I want to play in-game music in ALL my games, not just for the ones that support it. That means a required patch for every individual PS3 game. Yeah, "congrats players, you can use your own music...in Pixeljunk Monsters."

Yeah exactly! But even worse news, is that it's not even yet available in Pixeljunk Monsters! He was asked about that one, and he said the thing shown in the video was an earlier build, and so it won't work in that game unless it's patched either. Unless I'm mistaken on his answer . . . He says specifically "Jeff Rubenstein replied on June 30, 2008 at 4:11 pm

That was a modified, earlier version of Firmware 2.4 (check the date when we show the clock). No word yet on if PJM will patch that functionality."

I don't even have PJM, so why would I care about whether or not I get in-game music in it? I want global functionality with it, not just games where the developer just said "Why not?"

          I'm very disappointed.

i read an article that we might be getting a clock to, with 2.40. Ingame messaging and trophies don't interest me. I want a clock.

Yup, a clock was also shown and talked about in the video walkthrough of the update.
