Well here's something no one expected (not), Harmonix announced Rock Band 2. With an official debut at E3 later this year, maybe E3 won't suck after-all.

The kick with this release is the fact that they have been working with both Sony and Microsoft to put out functional - cross platform - downloadable content. So no more arguing between the fanboys!

Shocker! Harmonix has done and made Rock Band 2. The game will be out on the Xbox 360 this September, and the PS3 later this year. The sequel will feature a new set list, and the RB2 bundle will feature "quieter, more realistic, and more reliable instruments" says Lead Designer Dan Teasdale. The good news for those who already own Rock Band is that all the songs you've purchases so far will be playable and supported in Rock Band 2. As far as Harmonix is concerned, there's no difference between "Rock Band 1 DLC" and "Rock Band 2 DLC" — we're just releasing awesome songs every week onto the Rock Band platform, all of which are playable by the Rock Band titles that support DLC," says Teasdale. The sequel will offer folks a new way to play the DLC they currently own, however. Sure, Rock Band 2 should come as no surprise, but it does sound like Harmonix is pushing things forward. Teasdale points out:

We've been working hard with Microsoft and Sony to develop a way to share content between games, and we're really happy that we'll be the first game to support fully functional cross-title DLC.

The game will get its official debut at this year's E3. Looking forward to it.

What do they mean cross platform DLC? Isn't all the songs available on the PS3 version available on 360 and vice versa also?

It means that RB1 DLC is essentially the same as RB2 DLC, and theoretically should work both ways.

      I'm still getting GH:WT, though.

So just to be clear, does this also mean that I can download the RB1 DLC through RB2?

Well now I'm just pissed off. I'm still waiting to blow hundreds of dollars on the original because it hasn't been released in Australia yet...

I'd have to actually see what the new improvements are on the new instruments before I buy the bundle. But I'll definitely be getting the game anyways. I hardly even play any of the on-disc songs for the current game as it is so being able to carry over DLC is awesome, especially with the huge pack of The Who coming in 2 weeks.

I'm actually surprised it's coming so soon. I might get the drum kit if there's significant improvements made, but otherwise all my equipment is perfectly functional. September can't come soon enough now.
