Wii DVD: A Possibility in the Near Future?

Magimaster | July 01, 2008 | News | Wii
A few months ago rumors surfaced about a new version of the Wii which would have DVD functionality. Apparently it seems that Nintendo are seriously considering producing this, however they plan on addressing the current shortage issue first before moving on to the project.
Nintendo's planned DVD-ready Wii system appears to be on hold at the moment. The morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports today that at a stock holder meeting on the 27th, company president Satoru Iwata said of the device, "With supply constraints [of the Wii] continuing worldwide, the priority is on the current model."

This updated Wii system has been mentioned by Nintendo before only in vague terms. The firm originally suggested a release date of some time last year.

Nikkei also reports that at the same stock holder meeting, Nintendo revealed plans for a retail release of the DS's 1seg tuner peripheral this July. The device, which allows Japanese DS users to view digital television broadcasts, is currently being sold exclusively online.

Nah. Who enjoys watching DVD'S in PS2 for example? It's like listening to music in a cellphone...Ipods and MP3s are made for that. Home cinemas and the alike are made for us to see DVD's at perfect quality - both video and sound. Doubt anyone will buy it. Specially if it raises the price. I'm sure everyone will opt for the "old" one.

I listen to music on my phone all of the time.

Why would I waste 50 odd quid on buying an mp3 when I can listen to it perfectly fine on my phone?

Same thing applies with DVD's. Dont be so quick to jump on the "No body uses it" wagon.

A console that has the ability to play DVDs is just a convenient feature. I used to use my PS2 to watch movies all the time. Now my 360 can play them, so why would I bother getting a DVD player at all?

There are cellphones that play music as well as any mp3 player now, since they've become so multi-functional. If no one cared to use their phone as a music player, why do manufacturers advertise that feature so avidly?

UMM, it's not going to raise the price dvd players only cost $20. But it's pretty much pointless.

Well, from personal experience I know that DVD functionality can come in handy for college students. If you're looking into buying a Wii anyways and don't want to spend extra money on a DVD player, then this seems like a good choice. I know just about all laptops come equipped with a DVD drive, but having a separate DVD player gives you the ability to watch it on a bigger screen.

Anyhow, I think Nintendo should hold off on this and try to integrate a Blu-Ray player in their next-gen console. Do I honestly think this will happen? Not a chance in hell.

My Wii is siting right on top of a DVD player. Again, it's pointless.

Well this would seem like a good idea for the next Wii version if you ask me, for next gen that is. Adding this in now could seem like people bought a low end version of the console. Same thing with the many PS3's out there.

Still would be nice to have.
