Games We Love but Wish We Could Love Playing
8 hours 9 mins ago
We had our first taste of Diablo III and already 2600 people are complaining about the direction in which Blizzard has gone with their artistic style for the third installment.
The petition mainly claims that what was shown in the Diablo III videos is a lot brighter and colorful and not enough darkness and evil is present, comparing it to the likes of Word of Warcraft'ed style art.
Personally, as a Diablo fan, I found the style of Diablo II to be pretty impressive. You want darker? wear some sunglasses while you play. For me, I'm just thankful that there even is a Diablo III; what's your take, will you be another one to sign the petition?

Blizzard pays attention to fan feedback (which is usually constructive, remember the original Crucio Siege Tank?) and will probably make the game darker.
It doesn't matter to me, either way, but I can see why it would to some people.
Seriously, that petition is ridiculous. And I honestly don't think this is specific to Diablo fans, but Blizzard fans in general. If you go on the WoW forums, it's like a gathering of the biggest MMO crybabies. When BC was coming out, people complained so much about the male Blood Elf models Blizz had to change it.. the main complaint being they were too thin and thusly, too gay (actually they were pretty normal looking, but compared to the bulky males of other races, they definitely were smaller).
Blizzard's game are amazing and so the fans have such high expectations when it comes to sequels. I was disappointed myself by some of the SC2 graphics, it just looked too cartoony, although it's a lot more 'grittier' looking now. If something doesn't look right, it's reasonable to criticize it.
Yes, you can criticize something. That is your right as someone familiar with a series/game... but I think that the complaints about the Blood Elf model, for example, were really, really foolish. There were fans who were against the change, and even those who disliked the more normal proportions of the male Blood Elf could have easily chosen another race, or eventually gotten over the issue.
I've never stumbled upon quite so much complaining on other game forums. Are you suggesting this is because other games are not as good as anything Blizzard might come up with? Maybe those players just don't have as much to complain about.
Yes. The two biggest RTSes in the past 10 years? Brood War and Warcraft 3, with BW still being the biggest professional "e-sport" in the world. No one makes RTS games like Blizzard.
SC2 has a lot to live up to. They need to recapture the same magic that Blizzard nailed with the first SC. The units have to look great, because players will be spending countless hours using them. The graphics have to look new but still have "that ol' SC feel" and the gameplay has to be perfectly balanced between the 3 races. With so many things to do, of course there will be fans bitching. The original SC2 Siege Tank looked like ass, it may not be a big deal to the casual player but legions of SC gamers will be playing this game for another 10 years so listening to their feedback is much more important for Blizz.
I expect the same from Diablo fans.
I think video games are works of art, and they shouldn't have change forced upon them.
