Despite the Wii Fit still staying strong in the sales charts, it seems the majority of Wii Fit owners don't even play the game, with a massive 64% of owners saying that they completely stopped using it after purchase.

Do you use Wii Fit faithfully everyday?
• 22 percent — I record my progress faithfully everyday
• 6 percent — Maybe once every two or three days
• 6 percent — Once a week
• 64 percent — Stopped using after purchase

This trend seems like it'd apply to most Wii games or casual gamers. "That looks so cute/cool!" Two weeks later, they forget about the purchase.

A game like this, if you really wanted to use it to its full potential, would require commitment, as with any change in lifestyle. And we know how good people are at that...

And if you really wanted to lose weight/get in shape, I mean really want to, you're not going to get a game for it.

Ironically there was an article awhile ago saying the same thing about the Wii itself. Said something like over 60% of Wii owners haven't touched their Wii in months.

I'm not surprised really. It was the same scenario with me and Wii Sports, though Wii Sports has more replayability. I played it a lot when I first got my Wii, but I stopped once I had more games. I think for Wii Fit the sole reason you'd keep on using it is your personal determination and motivation. It's something you have to force yourself to do everyday to make use of it.

That kind of statistic really does make the total Wii sales seem less impressive. >_>

Sad to see that much waste.

Perhaps I'll sound like a fanboy, but I do have a few qualifications for this article/survey.

    a. All exercise equipment suffers from this type of drop off. People are lazy, want instant gratification when it comes to weight loss, and tend to lose interest quickly. How many people have some form of exercise machine in their home that they never use? I personally have two.
    b. "90% of all statistics can be made to say anything 50% of the time". A pole of 1000 readers on an internet website is hardly what I would call a wide and varied survey. For starters, internet websites attract a far different crowd than the bulk of Wii Fit's target audience, and that small of a sample, 1000 votes, is no where comparable to the millions of Wii Fit units sold already. Most statistical standard deviations would be far higher than this survey's scope.
    c. It is a single piece of software. Plenty of software gets put away after the first few weeks or so, only pulled out for the occasional replay or whatnot. The statistic Raziel 326 was mentioning is far more important than the use of a single piece of software.

      Fatal Error Jul 4, 08
1000 people polled is actually a good enough amount of people to get a decent idea for how much use it really gets. The percent error is probably in the range of 5%, which doesn't really change the general consensus of it at all.

Uh, exercise equipment absolutely does not suffer this type of drop off. Exercise equipment is a much larger investment, and as a result is far more likely to hold consistent use for quite a while after purchase. As far as your comment about "a single piece of software"...Well, yeah, that's true for most games that simply aren't very good or worthwhile. Try to tell me that games like Gears of War, Call of Duty 4 ,Grand Theft Auto 4, Halo 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Super Smash Brothers, and many other games suffer this same dropoff.

But the integrity of a poll normally used would sample all different demographics who purchased the game, whereas an Internet poll attracts a more specific demographic, plus fanboy influence.

According to VGchartz, 2.3 million copies of Wii Fit have sold in Japan. a poll of 1000 people would equate to around .04% of the owners. That is a ridiculously small sample for a definitive poll, much less a poll on an internet website targeting a specific set of consumers.

Plenty of exercise equipment gets ordered off TV and never used. Perhaps not the super expensive Bowflex machines and such, but their are plenty of things to help people exercise that sit in closets at this very minute. As you said, larger investments mean a more serious commitment, but cheaper devices, like Wii Fit, are often abandoned.

And tell me, do you really think you'll still be playing MGS4 and GTA4 religiously in five months? When was the last time you played the single player campaign in Halo, Gears, or Smash Bros? Wii Fit is basically a casual single player game, so comparing it to a competitive online multiplayer game is apples to oranges.

GTA4 and MGS4 have tremendous offline and online experience to last people many months. GTA is nortorious with its massive replayability. Hell look at San Andreas, that game been out 4 years and the forum has more PPD than GTA4 forum. That shows you how many people to this day is playing it.

MGS4 has a massive offline experience to keep you hooked and playing for months and years. So what exactly are you trying to prove with those examples, which are bad ones?

GTA4 for both systems will get DLC which will make people play them again for months. I can't speak for Moonrise on whether he will replay them, but the fans of those games will in fact replay them alot. And Those games has more replayability than Wii fit, which will lose its flair quickly in weeks.

I find it hilarious that Wii fanboys thumbed down your comment since its true.

So basically this article proves that Wii owners waste money on games, and probably the console it self, and never use after a few times. Wow, and they say the PS3 and 360 are expensive, At least were getting games to play and last us for months and years, while Wii gets games that last on appeal for Weeks.

Uh, considering that this article/poll was done/published in May, and that Wii Fit came out in December, makes the 22% actually pretty high.

      Miss Razz Jul 6, 08
It also makes the 64% much higher

        Akira_EX Jul 6, 08
No, it doesn't. It makes the 64% seem pretty low. The fact that 22% of gamers are still playing Wii Fit six months after is astounding. Especially when most games can be blown away in less than a couple weeks by otaku and the such.

That trend applies to almost everything to do with fitness. I do not believe it is the Wii's fault.

Proof that casual gaming is dieing down.
