Sakurai, the man behind Brawl, said that there were many characters in Brawl, but many were cut, but he won't tell us which characters were almost in Brawl because it's in the past. But I for one want to know who they were.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine in the United Kingdom, Masahrio Sakurai, director for Super Smash Bros. Brawl told the magazine that at one point, Brawl's roster was much larger.

The interview, which will be available in it's entirety this Friday when the magazine is released, has Sakurai saying "I had a lot more characters, for example..", but he said that as the game moved closer to completion, more and more characters had to be cut, leaving gamers with the roster the finished game has now.

However, Sakurai also said "but sadly I can't discuss which ones didn't make it", leaving the subject of the cut roster completely up to speculation.

Smart man. He knows he's going to stir up the fanboys if he announces the characters which didn't make it. Personally, I would've liked it if they took stuff out from SSE and used that extra space for more characters.

I wish we had more. But I guess the amount we have now is fine too.

The picture on that site makes it seem like there would have been near 200 playable characters. I doubt Nintendo would have went overboard like some poorly constructed Mugen game.

People hacked the game and got a look at the files in it. Basically it was the melee characters that were cut and a few more clones.

Sakurai is a smart businessman, he's not going to give you the whole lot at once. If he did, who would care about the next Smash game?

Smash Bros. isn't really the type of game designed for 'expansion', he'd then have to put them into Subspace somehow, and game info into the log thing etc.

The obvious one that was taken out is Geno. Ridley might have been a character but was thought to have worked better as a subspace boss, and there might have been some others taken out due to copyright issues.
