Noel Gallagher - "Violent games cause knife fights"

Euphoric | July 05, 2008 | News | Misc
Oasis lead Noel Gallagher has come out swinging at violent games saying that they contribute to knife fighting. He says violence in games are the cause for the rise in "scumbags" causing trouble on the streets.
Noel Gallagher has waded into the debate over youth knife crime while picking up a prize at the Silver Clef music awards in London.

The Oasis guitarist said it was a "pity scumbags are taking over our streets", and claimed video games were partly to blame for violence.

He said: "In my day, status was trying to be somebody, do you know what I mean, not trying to kill somebody?"

The star said knife crime was a problem across the UK, not just in London.

Youth knife crime

The 41-year-old added: "I was up in Liverpool for a week a couple of weeks ago and even on the news there it's every single night.

"I don't even know what Cameron or Gordon Brown are going to do about it. I was watching a documentary on Panorama and another one about kids carrying knives and violence.

"People say it's through violent video games and I guess that's got something to do with it.

"If kids are sitting up all night smoking super skunk [cannabis] and they come so desensitised to crime because they're playing these video games, it's really, really scary."

Whoever approved this, shame on you. I made a horrible spelling error in the title and I should have been told to edit that

"People say it's through violent video games and I guess that's got something to do with it."

It's not like he's saying "If you play video games you will try and knife someone".

The media twist everything and blow small things out of proportion all the time. Get over it.

The BBC didn't blow it out of proportion. You did.

Ease up. I posted the article. Doesn't mean I agree with it. And everything I wrote is what the original article said or implied so I didn't "do" anything.

And thanks for the title edit

You posted an article with an incredibly misleading title. Gallagher did not say "Violent Games cause knife fights" or anything of the sort.

He said that kids are becoming desensitised to crime.

^ Donnelly - Being acclimatised to something means you are more likely to take part in it.

And that title was actually from the site I got the article from, Kotoku.com.au; and I only used the BBC link because by GameGrep rules that's the one I have to use.

No where did I say I endorse anything in the article or that it represents my point of view. I'm just posting information I've gathered for the benefit of those on this site that care.

I suppose he has a point. This generation's grown up seeing violence on tv and in the video games we play. I'm sure it subconsciously affects people. Now, I'm not trying to say all the kids are trying to kill each other but out of the entire gaming population, at least a handful must draw their influence from violent games.

But a handful of children can be influenced by pretty much anything.

Such as? Their mom chopping up vegetables? You don't have to agree with me but I think a lot of it has to do with the content in video games and the way it's presented. Noel's right about the whole desensitivity to crime, though I won't bring up the drug issue. Take a look at GTA for example. You can go around and shoot random people on the streets. But what they aren't showing you is that these fictional people could be having a family or what not. To the player they're just faces without names. And if kids become influenced by this, then they treat the world around them in a similar manner. Keep in mind that the kids running around knifing each other, probably aren't very high in the socio-economic strata of society and don't have the same upbringing as you and me.

Yeah you're right, I don't have to totally agree with you.Sure games will influence some children. My point is that everyone seems to blame everything wrong with todays youth on video games, when almost anything can and will influence some children.

I think music would influence children more than video games. It seems like 80% of teens these days want to be freaking gangsters because of Rap/Hip Hop.

Obviously this doesn't represent all children, but my cousins have been playing GTA since they were at least 8 and 10 and they don't even get into fights let alone anything worse.

They should ban sponge bob because it make kids think eating burgers is good for you.

Ahh, Noel Gallagher. Put out ONE good CD and you think you own the *bleep*ing United Kingdom and think whatever you say is the law of the land. Rockstars should leave this shit to the politics for Chrissake.

I think thats a bit harsh. He was only stating his opinion when asked to for part of an interview. Hardly like he's preaching to everyone. Infact he didn't even actually categorically say that video games = knife crime.

Having said that, musicians should just stick to what they're good at (mostly).
