40GB PS3 to be 'replaced' in August?

A leaked Wal-Mart Spreadsheet has recently found its way into the hands of Joystiq. This spreadsheet in short states that the 40GB PS3 is going to be 'replaced' in August with a new model. A return for the 20GB, 60GB, or even the 80GB SKU? Or perhaps just a new bundle? We'll just have to wait and see
A Wal-Mart spreadsheet allegedly listing products that the company is having difficulty stocking states that the 40GB PS3 "will be replaced with [a] new model in early August." We received this sheet from an employee that's sent us solid information in the past though s/he can't confirm the origin of the note that the model will be replaced. Of course, in the eternal battle over semantics, "replaced" could simply mean some minor tweaks to the model and the addition of the DualShock 3.

I think at E3 they'll announce an 'Elite' PS3 and move the current 80gig to the 40gig's place.

If the 20 GB is under $300 I could buy that...I currently have no need for all that excess memory and I want a select few games for it.

I'm willing to bet money that all this is is a new package, probably just having the PS3's come with a dualshock controller instead of the non-rumble sixaxis. Nothing to twist your panties about.

*bleep* you Sony. I just bought a 40gb PS3 and you're now replacing it?
I'm sick of all these "new models" coming out, and the people who bought the older ones being left behind. >_>

i dont feel left behind the 60 gig seems to be the most solid and least problematic. arent they supposed to be putting in new less expensive chips in them or something?

I'm just pissed because I bought a 40G only to realize (after my receipt expired, to top it off!) that it can't play PS2 games, and is incompatible with SD cards and Memory sticks. *bleep*! oh wel, when I get a decent job I'll sell this one and replace it.

Stupid. Just frickin' stupid. You're pissing off your userbase, Sony. If you even dream of making a PS4, stop misleading everyone like this! You're only hurting yourself like you did with cancelling the 60GB and replacing it with 40GB.

Hasn't Microsoft done the same thing? It happens, big *bleep*ing deal. I bought my 60 and the 80 came out a month or two later. I'm not really bothered by it at all.

The different 360 models have always remained compatible with every one of their peripherals.

The only difference between the 3 is pack in's (HDD size, wired or wireless controller, etc.)

edit: In fact, I'm not 100% sure if the Arcade version comes with an HDMI port.

Is there something that's incompatible between the systems? I'm pretty sure my controllers work with all of them, as well as various other media I attach to my PS3.

Well, all the BC across all three 360 models is constant.

        I've got a 60GB PS3 so I'm content.

Oh, the BC. Yeah, the whole "Emotion Engine" kinda made it a pain but really it doesn't cost them much to just throw it in there, or at least keep the software emulation. The Cell processor is certainly powerful enough to handle emulation of PS1 and PS2 games just fine.

While I have no idea if it's even close to being true, I have a friend who works at our local Walmart and he and his co-workers were telling me someone "within" Walmart told them that a new 120GB model was coming out soon to compete with the 120GB 360 Elite. I just wish everyone would make up their minds. =(

LOL why anyone gets upset with these things doesn't make sense to me. You have to be new to anything technology if this upsets you. You HAVE to be. All the sheep who bought the iPhone literally protested when the price dropped. Everybody cried when they bought an HD-DVD player All this moaning when a new PS3 SKU gets released. Why? Nobody forced you to buy anything, and this is just how the technology field works. Sony isn't hurting anyone. If it's that big of a deal, BUY A BIGGER HARD DRIVE.

Unless some ground breaking new features are added to a new model, I don't understand the beef, especially from people on these forums. You people are the last ones I would expect to be caught off guard by these announcements. We hear, read, and discuss these things everyday on the net, so if you have even the slightest reluctance about buying a potentially obsolete model, then don't buy it.

lol, I was just about the state the same thing. Techology grows people, cheaper and smaller materials are made, thus allowing bigger space, and cheaper console. The fact your complaining proves that you hate PS3. We all got a damn system. Sure everyone loved the 60GB but the fact that it was too expensive for some of you and many complained this happened and that happened, and here we are today year and half later the same bitching.

People like you are the reasons why the 2.40 FW was shitty, you was nagging them for the trophies and in game music only to be half ass implemented.

        uhm what?

Most complaints about the 60GB pricing were in regard to the extreme / excessive / absolute lack of 20GB models in the market and the silent murder of the SKU with no real notice about it or attempt to even let it live out a longer span in the product cycle and only leaving people with 1 system that had a large tag on it. Many would have probably been silent if they actually had the original SKU's on the market that they should have had.

Sony was already on the path to axing the hardware compatibility when they released in PAL territory using software support, it had nothing to do with "bitching" it was that they wanted to protect their own skin and stop eating so much on every system. You give far too much credit to people who complained but purchased systems anyway.

Hardly, all im saying is too many people are complaining, and believe me I've seen my fair share of people moaning and bitching about the system is too much money all around the world. Yes it was, but it was the perfect system for the PS3. I would bet money if people never complained at all, and bought the system, the 60GB model would still be here today.

Sony had said it themselves that if people actually request the 60GB or 20GB models back they would do so. But so far I don't see many requesting for it. But who knows, maybe this one is that one.

There would be even less if the 20 had been in proper supply from the start to offer that alternative price point. If they questioned demand then them selling out at launch should have been an indicator that people wanted them.

I love how people fall back on the Sony claim of producing those models again, it's really adorable and so innocent sounding, sadly there's no realization that those people that request have to do it to their supplier (Best Buy, Target, FYE, Circuit City, etc) and actually get their supplier to make a high enough purchase contract to warrant bringing that back for a steady period.

No company is going to go out of their way to do it because the logistics of doing it would require them to expel a lot more money and honestly it's easier for them to tell you what you want to buy because in the end, you do it anyway. If they made MGS4 $129 in some lame limited only packaging people would cry but they'd still bend over and take it because not enough of them would ever emerge to have them sell something else.

Waking up to the reality of modern business can be a healthy thing.

I don't see why people complain so much about all the different models. When I bought my PS3 back in January in Best Buy, they had the 40GB, the 60GB, AND the 80GB all lined up next to each other. I seriously doubt it's all that hard to find 60GB models anyway, I found mine brand new more than 8 months after it was discontinued.

I've been eyeing a PS3 for later this summer anyhow. I was hoping on finding an old unsold 80g bundle somewhere, or perhaps the MGS4 80g bundle (if it wasn't just temporary) because if I'm going to spend hundreds on a console that prides itself on nifty extras and potential I might as well go all out.

If you're buying a Mercedes you don't NOT get air conditioning. :/

BC is always lovely to have around. Saves space and time (and given my past consoles I've rather come to depend and count on it being there) so it would be nice if this possible new SKU had that.
