Sony's president of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has noticed something that gamers may have noticed: There are very few major exclusives in this generation of games. In a recent interview with ThreeSpeech, Yoshida talks about why he believes third-party developers are making so many multiplatform games and, as a result of this, why it is becoming more important for first-parties to make exclusive titles...
Sony's president of worldwide studios (and Phil Harrison replacement) Shuhei Yoshida, says that the role of first-party exclusives is becoming increasingly important as third party devs can rely on multi-platform releases to recoup profits.
"In this generation," said Yoshida, "it costs much more to develop one product, it's just natural for third-party publishers trying to recoup the investment from multiple platforms. I think that's pure economic pressure, pushing most of the third parties to move from some exclusive titles to more multi-platform titles.
"Because we know that is the trend, we, as a company, can invest in our first-party studios; in terms of exclusive titles, our role becomes more important," he went on to add.
