The ESA recently took a survey on young U.S. gamers on topics like how many homes have video game consoles, how old the average gamer is, and how much parents actually think video games help their children's lives. WARNING: some results may be shocking!

"This new data underscores the fundamental principle that computer and video games are a mainstream entertainment form, which captures the imagination of every segment of our society," said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA, the U.S. association representing computer and video game publishers. "No longer is there a stereotypical gamer. With deeper market penetration and the broadening of our audience base, video games have incorporated themselves into America's cultural and social fabric."

Among the survey's main findings:

-65 percent of American households play computer and video games;

-38 percent of American homes have a video game console;

-The average game player is 35 years old;

-One out of four gamers are over age 50;

-Women age 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (33 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent); and,

-41 percent of Americans expect to purchase one or more games this year.

-The new research also shows how involved parents are in the way their children buy, rent and play games:

-94 percent of parents are present when games are purchased or rented;

-88 percent of parents report always or sometimes monitoring the games their children play; and,

-63 percent of parents believe games are a positive part of their children's lives.

    The picture with Rihanna on X-Box Live would of been hotter, but that's just me. At least she looked like she was actually playing. :/

    Why does there always need to be a sexualized picture of a girl whenever "girls" and "games" are mentioned in an article. >_>

    We don't lick our controllers, it's unhygenic. >_>

    You do not disturb our traditions, damnit.

    On a sidenote...didn't know the 360 controller could do that.

    LOL @ the picture included with this article. Obviously, my 360 controller represents a phallus or object of feminine desire.

    Glad I have a chance to use this shot. I was gonna trash it because of the quality, but then I noticed something:

    Hey, look, I was at E3. All those OTHER women were at E3, and holy crap, we're so... NORMAL looking! D: Now please stop depicting us in such a ridiculous light, unless we're gonna get really sexy gamer GUY propaganda in return.

    Throughout my 2 years of being on Xbox Live, I've run into only 3 females. I honestly cannot see this statement true.[/size]

      How do you know the gender of all of the persons you played?

      If you're going by the voices, then MAYBE they kept their mouths shut because they didn't want to be swarmed by horny guys asking to be their friend....

      The figures for female games is rising....Of course, statistics are usually off by at least a little bit, since it uses a small pool of persons to poll, not to mention people LIE....

      Obviously, personal experience can be accurately applied to global demographic. Brilliant!

    These statistics also take into account computer games. Plenty of women play puzzle games on Yahoo and Solitaire on the desktop, and wouldn't know a 360 controller if it jumped up and said "hi."

      Therein lies the issue...the difference between Core and Casuals.

    Female gamers kinda turn me off these days, as they usually fall into at least one of these categories:

    1) They play because it's "in" (if they're around other gamers in the area, they feel they have to play to be cool).
    2) They're addicted to shovelware titles only (Girls who think "Petz" is real gaming creeps me out).
    3) They're yaoi addicted Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy VII fangirls (I don't think I need to explain this one).

    Now yes, I have met many a female gamer who thankfully don't fall into any of these categories. Unfortunately, a chance hang out becomes null as they're usually either over 30, lesbian, or have a boyfriend. And being friends with a girl who has a boyfriend rarely works out.

    Most of your comments are about that picture more than the statistics.

    WHAT THE *bleep* IS A WOMAN

    Not that suprising tbh. You could define a gamer as anyone who owns a games console. Lots of women now own DS's and the like, so technically they're gamers.

    So that means I have 40% chance of meeting a girl playing a game? Thats awesome, if I find one she can lick my controller anyday.

    Meh, even though the Grep community hates Rihanna, it's whatever. I like RBC's pic more anyway, not oversexualized, not overextravagent, plus, no Sephiroth/Cloud yaoi.
