In the midst/aftermath of E3, Game|Life's Chris Kohler was able to sit down with Nintendo of America's Executive VP of Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway, to discuss the company's lackluster/disappointing E3 conference, and what to expect in the future. The topics discussed in the interview include the lack of core content, no new 2008 game announcements, the Virtual Console, and the storage situation.

Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway wants you to know that she is not fake.

"Tell your blog that I'm really a genuinely smiley, nice person. Because people think I'm fake, smiling up there," Nintendo's new executive vice president said in an interview during last week's E3. Dunaway was referring to the company's poorly-received E3 press conference days before, in which she served as the lead presenter. Gaming fans watching at home, and even some in-person attendees, thought her exuberant performance sounded like false enthusiasm for the company's lineup of mostly casual games.

Personally, I think Dunaway, a former Yahoo executive who joined Nintendo of America last year, is a convenient scapegoat for angry gamers disappointed by Nintendo's lack of hard-core content. That's a real issue, of course, one we tackled right off the bat in the interview. Read on for more info on Nintendo's business plans, including:

  • Where all the hard-core content is at
  • Why Nintendo won't be surprising us with last-minute 2008 game announcements
  • The official answers on Virtual Console's scaled-back schedule and lack of storage
  • What's up with Professor Layton

All she talked about for the core games were Ac and WiiMusic. And she wonders why people hate her.

    quote
Wired.com: So the WiiSpeak microphone is not packed in with Animal Crossing. Why sell it separately?

Dunaway: Because it's not essential to fun gameplay, to have the microphone. You can have a lot of fun with the customization and creativity aspects of Animal Crossing without exploring the community aspects. But for people who want that rich community experience, the WiiSpeak really enables that. So it's a deepening of the experience, but not necessary.
Way to totally screw fans out of another 20-40$.

    quote
Dunaway: We don't have any storage solutions to announce at this E3. I know what we do in my household, which is to focus on the new game, because we're always kind of excited, "OK, what's going on WiiWare this week?" So we delete the old games that we're not using, knowing that they're always going to be there if we want to go back. It seems to be kind of a trade for a lot of gamers, that they want the newest, the freshest and they'll play that for a while.
She doesn't want people to hate her, yet she says this for a second time, and expects fans to accept it.

That image makes her look sort of ... normal ?

As for the interview itself, I'm glad to hear that I wouldn't need to spend any money on Wii Software this year.

Have fun missing some great third parties titles, then.

I can't think of anything that's actually caught my eye this year.

        I'll look harder ... ?

Other third party titles, well from what I count there's...4, and those are the good ones. But, if you want to play the good version of Dead Rising, then there's only 3. And I'm sure those titles can be missed without much loss. When you think of upcoming games, do you think of The Conduit or Gears of War 2?

    I really liked this interview.
I'm glad she stood up for herself, people need to stop being rude.
Also we should just enjoy the games Nintendo has provided us,try the new ones, and expect more to come.

I think the writer's hit the nail on the head with this statement: "Personally, I think Dunaway, a former Yahoo executive who joined Nintendo of America last year, is a convenient scapegoat for angry gamers disappointed by Nintendo's lack of hard-core content." I think her demeanor tends to epitomize the casual gaming approach taken by Nintendo. There just seems to be something different about her than someone such as Perrin Kaplan (the former VP of Marketing & Corporate Affairs for Nintendo).

Every gamer needs something to hate, and it seems Cammie is the new Jack Thompson, if I spelled his name right, if it deserves to be spelled right.
