Sure the new PS3 is 80 GB, sure it is the same price as the 40 GB was. But there isn't going to be a cheaper 40 GB, and the new PS3 won't be able to save PS and PS2 games.. The new PS3 has many advantages, also, and with many of the new games, most people won't be looking to play old games.

Among the many news items in today's E3 2008 Sony Press Conference was the announcement that it will be introducing a new $399 80GB PlayStation 3. On stage, Sony Computer Entertainment America President Jack Tretton was upbeat about the console, saying it offered "twice the storage for the same price."

While such a proposition was attractive, Tretton also raised some questions by saying the console will have "the same functionalities" as the 40GB. That model has been the subject of criticism for its lack of backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games and, to a lesser extent, not having media card slots. Tretton also omitted any mention of whether or not Sony would continue to manufacture the 40GB, perhaps at a lower price point.

"The new PS3 has many advantages"? I can only see one advantage over the 40GB, the increased HDD space.

AR, Thanks for that link, I just bought one.

And @The 80GB PS3 Also you have to take into account the price drop that is going to put the 80GB version in the 40GB's old price slot.

Um.... they can't save PS1, PS2 games? Can someone please tell me if this applies to the 80GB MGS4 bundle? I was going to play GoW 2 but if I can't save what's the point?

You can save PSone/PS2 games on the old 80GB model. You create an internal memory card.
