Feminists are upset over "Fat Princess"

Gothic Girl | July 23, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
If you think the claims that "Resident Evil 5 is racist" are ridiculous, then get a load of this! ...

Some of you may have heard of Fat Princess, the cute little PS3 game where your goal is to feed your princess (thus making her "fat") so that enemy soldiers can't kidnap her and carry her from your kingdom.
It's a unique and cute concept ... however not everybody feels that way.

"Mighty Ponygirl" from Feminist Gamers, and her friend Melissa "Shakes" McEwan, are upset over the way the game "reinforce(s) nasty stereotypes about women and the obese" and believe that it will create a "new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes."

You'd think that feminists would be more inclined to show anger towards more "important" issues about objectifying women, like the "boob upgrades" that every female Soul Calibur IV character has had.
Honestly, the “core game mechanics” are brilliant, and if I didn’t care one whit about the objectification of women or fat-bashing, I would think this was the best thing since… well, Team Fortress 2. And I’m quite sure that this describes 99% of the PSN players out there, so I’m sure the game will do very well.

But here is another game mechanic:

Instead of running out into the forest to find cake to fatten up the princess with, why not go out and find gold (which is a lot heavier than cake) to stuff into a treasure chest. The more gold in the chest, the heavier it would be, and the harder it would be to carry.

Oh, but that’s not as “cute” as cake and fat chicks. Right.

So how about layering, Karamari-style, a bunch of random shit on top of the chest, like shrubbery, rocks, bison, etc, that would also weight it down. That could be cute, and silly, and not reinforce nasty stereotypes about women and the obese.

Sigh I suppose it would be fine if it was a prince wouldn't it?

Why not go a step further and make it a black, old fat princess? Any publicity is good publicity

Jesus, go burn a bra or something...

I don't have anything against women... but feminazis should be dragged through the street by horses.

How many times will the world have to get burnt to realize, you do not mess with videogamers.

    Prepare for the backlash feminists...

I'm sure most women agree with that, tbh.

We have our equal rights. Now feminists have nothing to bitch about, so they bitch about insignificant bullshit. It's sad, really.

Trust me, rights aren't totally equal just yet. I got some sexist shit from the Toshiba rep I met at E3 as well as some other ignorant press members.

But this article about Fat Princess? Really is rather excessive....

Fat hating is nothing new, i mean no one really likes fat people and i'm not being mean here it is true, even fat people hate fat people if they didn't then diets wouldn't exist. At the end of the day there will always be stereotypes and group culture where people have to be hated or disliked by others, there are too many people in this world for everyone to think fat is cuddly and nice... This game will do nothing, if anything it may spur some gamers to look at themselves critically and make them get some excersise, i mean that fat princess is something no one wants to become.

I've never heard of either this game or "boob upgrades", and I'm laughing my head off.

Anyways, it's just coincidence that it's a woman. If it were a man, then people would complain that because he's white, he's American, setting a large stereotype against America. If it were black, then Africans would play the racist card. It's getting really damn annoying at this point.

To be honest, it looks like a pretty fun little game.

I wouldn't play the race card, I'd play the *bleep*ing game and laugh my ass off at her obesity.

      BTW, I'm Black.

I hate feminists, I hate them, I hate them, I hate them. Men and Women are equal. Everything they fought for that is worthwhile has already been fulfilled.

Now, they're just picking at the little shit that doesn't even matter. This game is in no way sexist. It's fun. Games are fun and are meant to be enjoyed, not fussed over.

Now, I hate copying people, but, go make me a Sandwich.

There are worse / more important topics to get upset over and more worthy of taking action over than a freaking video game (ie: global warming, recession, etc). These women are just being elitist and need to get over themselves. Seriously.

Please don't hate me for saying so, but I read that M. McEwan blog and it really just seems to me that she is bitter because she is fat and unattractive.
[Btw fixed link in story...now it goes to her blog on the game]

Feminists like these are what give the rest of us self-empowering women a bad rep. -_- I mean, it's a flippin' game, and a very cute one at that! What about the 10000000 other female characters out there who fulfill bad stereotypes? Under dressed, big breasted ones (Namco, I'm looking at you), or the really annoying princess types who can't do anything except heal you in JRPGs? I can't believe they managed to find reason to pick on Fat Princess.

There is irony in the comments here, though, most of which are totally chauvinist. Gah, stop prolonging the never ending cycle and make your own damn sandwich!

What the hell? Okay, these clearly were not radical feminists, the ones against the whole 'sex appeal' bits for women...they should praise this difference. It's different from your average half-naked, big-breasted chick as RabidChinaGirl mentioned. Jeez, when will people stop targeting games and focus on the bigger issues? Earth to feminists, there's a bookstore of trouble just waiting for you to decipher...at your nearest bookstore/magazine stand.

Not to be sexist but the feminists that complain just see something controversial and bitch, I say if you haven't actually played the game or understand it, Don't bitch about it. And especially don't go to the public about what you don't understand.

Meh, if they think that ranting about it will make them feel better about their shitty self esteem and/or "standing up for the sisterhood" leave em. Who's gonna take them seriously anyways? Also hate the fact that they're making this seem like being fat is an unavoidable disease that women are sensitive about.
