360/PS3/Wii: Which does best in different genres?

NSX | July 23, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 Wii
GamesRadar finds overall what console has the best fighting games, racing games, sports games, RPGs, adventure games, first person shooters, platformers, and third-person games between the 360, the Wii, and the PS3.
"The thinking here is that the average gamer is unlikely to buy more than 5 games in one genre on their machine, so this figure is a more accurate representation of how good each console is for each type of game to the average gamer. OK then, here we go"

Well the PS3 and 360 are pretty much the exact same in genres. The Wii is the most unique with games like Mario and Wii sports. I prefer the PS3's type genre though.

    This needs to be noted:

    quote
Like any study, there are several potential problems with the data and we accept that. These are:

    1) Metacritic collects review scores from everywhere. If a lads' mag reckon DOA Xtreme 2 is a 10/10 because the girls are hot, that has as much weight as EDGE's opinion in the Metacritic universe. So the scores have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Having said that, it is a great way to show concensus opinion, and we reckon the scores are mostly accurate.

    2) While we applaud Metacritic's invaluable service, its genre-labelling is highly suspect. While we have left most games where they are, we could not stand idly by and let Geometry Wars go in as a first-person shooter. That's simply not true. So while we have made sure the highest profile games are where they should be, and tried to tidy up as best we could, the very idea of 'genre' is subjective and so, ultimately, fallible. In the data's defense, this relabelling task has been carried out by one person for this study, so even if the choices made may not be universally appeasing, they are at least consistent.

    3) Some games have not been included. Metacritic won't include a score for games that haven't been reviewed by enough sources. So brand new releases are not present and neither are extremely low-profile titles.

    4) The consoles have had different lengths of time on the shelves. Not only does that mean 360 has more games available than PS3, but also that the old games are just that - old. If something scored 85 on its release, it stays at 85 unless new reviews are added. If that exact same game were released today on PS3, it may look outdated already, so that has to be taken into consideration.
That, and review scores are usually all bunk anyway, and don't mean anything at retail. Total reliance on Metacritic doesn't help its case, though.

Actually, number 1 isn't correct. Metacritic only take review scores from respected publications/sites.

(That said the most respected of the respectable is given the same weighting as the least respected of the respectable.)

Yeah so because PLAY gives a 10 out of 10 to pretty much every game on a Sony platform, that boosts the games metacritic score.

Seems like another piece of info to start fanboy wars, 360 winning just about all categories and all. At least they stated what they took into account.

Wii has Adventure. Quite possibly one of my favorite games styles, although it not having the best platformers seems odd.

With the except of some form of an 'alternative' genre I think that is a very solid judgement.

I agree though . . . **sigh** why can't we just all understand each console has it's ups and downs, pros and cons.

I think that the 360 does FPS games better, the PS3 does action/TPS games better and the Wii does Party Games better.

I think the PS3 is catching up with the 360 in terms of FPS though, with Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 both looking fantastic. It's also keeping up it's quality third-person games, as we've got God Of War III, inFamous and MAG all on the way.

I totally agree with that. I think that not only the 360 controller itself is better for FPS games, but all FPS's seem to run silky-smooth on the system.

I know Halo 3 gets a lot of crap for various reasons, but I honestly think that it has THE best controls of any other FPS out there. And the controls in Gears is nothing to shrug off either.

I (only) have 6 games for the 360(), and 5 of them are shooters.

I would have to go with the 360 because of the sucess of the many games they have created
