Reigning champion for 13 years, Sony currently holds the title for the largest console maker in the world. But according to figures in the past while, this looks to soon change. Nevertheless, they're doing a heck of a lot better than last year!
Though currently riding high on continuing strong sales of the Playstation Portable and the recent launch of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony seems likely to run a close second to Nintendo by the end of year if the two companies attain their respective shipment targets.
Efforts to lower the production costs of the hefty Playstation 3 appeared to have paid off, with operating profit Y5.4 billion in the quarter as opposed to the Y29 billion loss recorded this time last year.
But the return of black ink at the games division after so many quarters in the red was small consolation to investors, after the Japanese electronics giant yesterday unveiled group-wide results which one analyst at KBC said were “not pretty, however you slice and dice them.”
The electronics giant, viewed by many as a bellwether of Japan’s export-led economy, disappointed investors with a lacklustre quarterly performance which missed market forecasts and could herald a punishing phase for consumer electronics.
The downbeat numbers follow months of apparently brightening prospects under Sir Howard Stringer – the group’s first ever non-Japanese chief executive who has spent nearly three years attempting to re-craft the company.
But yesterday’s reckoning of quarterly net profits, which took a 47 per cent year-on-year nosedive, suggests there remains a mountain to climb.
Analysts said that the numbers, which were difficult to assess properly because of changes to the way they were calculated, demonstrated Sony’s continuing vulnerability to the overall economic picture and the US and European slump.
Though it's true they made some questionable choices with the PS3. Not only did it initially cost more than half a grand, but it also came out after the competition. They really didn't need to make the PS3 so advanced. But I wholeheartedly enjoy my PS3 anyway.
As much of a Sony 'loyalist' as I am, there's no question MS is establishing a solid reputation as a powerful game entertainment company.
Then they over estimated how much people actually care about sony and went for the expensive stuff and relied on loyalty for exclusives.
And only recently have they realized that they need to change their business ideas. But there coming back.
I would like to see what they have in-store for the PS4, Will they keep there business plan, or will they totally change it. Like Nintendo did with the Wii.
As long as they make new and exciting Exclusives and franchises to replace the ones they lost Sony will be fine in the future. Sometimes you need to take risks in life, I guess thats what they thought with the PS3.
But I agree, Sony is doing very well lately. Despite the FF13 incident, I'd say they are fully in their stride now. Sales have been going up steadily within the last couple weeks, and their first party lineup has never seemed better.
Sure Sony won't absolutely cream the competition like they did the PS2, but I highly doubt they'll end up like the Gamecube. The PS3 is already much more popular than the 'Cube was; it's already established itself.
Besides, I don't think people would've been happy with just a simply upgraded PS2. Sony knew the people were expecting something big, so they took a risk. It was a costly risk in the first year and a half, but they're really getting into things now.
EDIT: figures I'd get negathumbed...
or ps6? would turn out would be a bad name.
but, its up to them.
