Earlier this month a two-page advert from Atlus appeared in Famitsu magazine highlighting a new project in the works, followed by a website launch. Given the theme and the material in both, few doubted it would be a new title in the Megami Tensei franchise. Would it be an actual SMT title, or a spinoff like Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga, or Persona game?

The latest issue of Famitsu confirms that the mystery game in development is indeed a Devil Summoner title, specifically the sequel to Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army.

Yep, the sequel still has a long winded title: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Avadon. Like the first game, Raidou Kuzunoha 2 is set in an alternate-era Taisho Japan. SMT/Persona artist Kazuma Kaneko returns for art direction and character design, and Shogi Meguro will handle the soundtrack. It's scheduled for release this October 23rd for the PS2 (sorry, no PS3 this time).

Atlus localized the first game in English back in October 2006. Reviewers generally liked the setting and story, but thought the battle system was a little on the easy and boring side. Raidou 2's director is promising things will be much more refined and interesting for the sequel.

I've also heard talk of a special edition with a pack-in of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne that has Raidou (and maybe other characters?) in i.t.
