Vivendi Franchises in trouble

Seeker X | July 30, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
Activision announced that they will continue publishing Vivendi franchises such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Ice Age, Prototype, and another unannounced IP, for their "long term strategy". The problem is that they're NOT going to publish other Vivendi games:

Ghostbusters: The video game
Brutal Legend
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
World in Conflict: Soviet Assault
50 Cent: Blood on the Sand

These games are NOT cancelled but they are without a publisher which COULD lead to possible cancellations. We can only hope that other publishers will buy these properties instead, I was personally looking forward to the Assault on Dark Athena remake myself.
Activision today announced that it will be retaining a handful of Vivendi Games' franchises that are a "strong fit with its long-term strategy". The games that have been confirmed as being added to Activision's stable include the Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon and Ice Age franchises, as well as Prototype and "a second new IP that has not been announced as of yet."

The downside of this announcement is that other Vivendi Games (namely Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Brütal Legend, WET, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and World in Conflict: Soviet Assault) are not being kept by Activision. "Activision will not publish other titles that were part of Vivendi Games' portfolio, and it is currently reviewing its options regarding these games" is all Activision would say on the matter when we talked to their Australian PR representative. However, a US spokesperson for Ghostbusters has gone on the record for the title, saying that "the game is not cancelled."

The news was even more grim for Vivendi Games Mobile and Sierra Online, which were described as "non-strategic business units".

Whether Ghostbusters, Brütal Legend and the rest of the discarded Vivendi games are sold off to new publishers or cancelled outright remains to be seen but it's likely to be a rocky future for these titles.

There is a reason that the games listed have no publisher

Edit: To be honest, at least 3 of those can't just be dropped.

It really feels like one of the best parts about this statement is that at Comic-con earlier this week Ghostbusters was on the floor and playable.

Yes Ghostbusters is totally in trouble, so much so that they showed it on multiple demo stations at an epic size convention.

It's always good when the folks at IGN can't be bothered to check facts before posting.

Oh no, Ghostbusters canceled? Oh what will I play in Q4 other than that? I guess I'll be stuck with Fallout, Gears, Star Wars, etc, etc. That just won't do.

Yeah seriously. Who cares? Not a single one those games are worth getting excited for. I'm fine with this.

I do...Brutal Legend will be awesome. Just as Pyschonaughts was.

      Chronicles of Riddick+bounus content+next gen graphics=yes please.

And as was stated before Ghostbusters is coming along nicely.

Yes, but the question is will anyone understand it enough to enjoy it or make it a commercial success? It's obvious that a game like Gears will make a splash due to it's name and pure action, but something abstract like Brutal Legend (which looks like a cartoon in screenshots) will confuse and turn off the majority of consumers.

Don't get me wrong, the game will be brilliant, as Tim Schafer seems to be the Midas of video games, but will it sell? I don't think so.

World in Conflict and Chronicles of Riddick are the only serious loses, hope someone picks those ones up if nothing else

Brutal Legend looks more badass then any of the games listed.

Brutal Legend needs to live. The game looks too bad ass. And Ghostbusters should be given a chance.

Blood in the Sand can go ahead and get canned for all I care.
