EA regrets supporting Xbox 360 & PS3 so strongly

Livewire_19 | August 01, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 Wii Company
EA regrets not supporting the Wii as much as they did the 360 and PS3, after posting a US$454 million net loss in the last fiscal year that ended on 31st March this year. And in the future the Wii will be their main platform for development and publishing.
John Riccitiello took over as the current Chief Executive Officer of Electronic Arts back in 2007. Speaking with Mercury News he pointed out that development resources are now being shifted over to Nintendo’s Wii, as well as the company choosing to make wise purchases, picking up a few game studios that Riccitiello himself ran prior to joining EA. Unfortunately, though, in part due to misplaced loyalty in supporting the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 so heavily and not getting much back, EA has struggled financially lately, posting a US$454 million net loss in the last fiscal year that ended on 31st March this year.

What a bunch of douche bags. It'd be like your wife or husband telling you two years after marriage "I regret being your lover".

Not really, they probably just didn't think they would make as much of a profit from it as there rivals systems. Just a major *bleep* up in there view.

Them giving their entire sports library to the PS3 is quite a bit of support.

As much as people like to rag on EA, they do help influence sales in tight decisions, they always have, Sega tried to make due without them bringing in 2K Sports to push them through but still people wanted to tag along with EA based on brand loyalty.

Sony has taken on enough damage with houses going multi-platform, would they really want to start offering exclusivity to their competition? Doubtful.

EA hasn't dedicated themselves to hardware for their series ports since the PS2 arrived, shortly after the GC and Xbox hit they ported on a large scale to those systems as well.

Strong enough is subjective, the dev cost is extremely high and it's a high risk thing to just dump something out there hoping it does well enough in returns. In cases of exclusivity the console maker gives the 3rd party incentive to keep their product in their house. Sony has the chance to do this but their current financial model doesn't allow it right now.

Basically their response to "you're not giving enough support" is "well compensate us and we'll give you something exclusive, otherwise we're going to pimp out our games like everyone else"

Their port work could use help but honestly it's surprising they have as high of a success rate as they do for titles given that EA has used a generic wrapper system for quite a long time now where the original code is wrapped for each platform, although I doubt they're still doing it for all platforms now since most engine work for the Wii seems to ride on the PS2 platform design creating two engines and two wrapper systems.

And I'm sure deep down, 360 and PS3 owners regret buying games published by EA that kept that company running this whole time.

True. Good thing I don't have games that were developed by EA, lol. And thank God for that.

Hmm . . . well I suppose they did mistake the PS3 & 360 players as those who love their titles. Personally I only have a handful, well make that perhaps 2, of their games in my entire game collection of ps1,ps2,ps3,xbox,360,and wii games.

I honestly do hope they get better profit through the wii. I kinda feel sorry for them!

As much as I want to agree with that statement, I have to say that losing EA, while it would mean less bad titles/ports being released by them, it would also really cut into the industry. EA is a BIG developer/publisher....

Some of the games they PUBLISH (not develop) turn out good. Look at Burnout Paradise, neh? Mind you, others could publish games, but EA has deep pockets, they could afford to publish more titles than most. More titles published = more games to play = maybe more good games get published....

They are big but that doesn't mean them leaving would hurt the industry, titles which are published by them like Burnout would just go elsewhere, and EA itself would likely fracture into several smaller organisations, which might actually force them to make some decent games for once

They're just like Square Enix; it's all about who pays more.
